Veeva is seeking an experienced intellectual property attorney to lead and expand our IP program in support of our innovative cloud-based solutions for the life sciences industry. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will play a key role in developing and protecting Veeva’s intellectual property portfolio, managing IP-related risks, and advising on a wide range of technology-related matters. This includes direct, hands-on involvement and supervision of Veeva’s largely in-house patent program.
This is a high-impact role for a strategic thinker who can work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and commercial teams to safeguard Veeva’s innovations while ensuring compliance with evolving IP laws. The ideal candidate is business-minded, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
What You’ll Do
Oversee and enhance Veeva’s global patent program, including drafting patents, overseeing filings and prosecutions, and running enforcement efforts.
Develop and execute on Veeva’s intellectual property strategy in other IP categories, including trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, open source, and use of AI.
Partner with product teams to identify and protect key innovations while balancing business objectives.
Advise on open-source software use, licensing, and compliance strategies.
Counsel business teams on intellectual property risks related to new products, partnerships, and acquisitions, including AI tools and AI-enabled products.
Oversee IP litigation and enforcement actions, coordinating with and managing outside counsel as needed.
Support contract negotiations by reviewing and advising on IP-related provisions in customer, vendor, and partner agreements.
Monitor changes in intellectual property law and implement best practices to ensure compliance and protection of Veeva’s assets.
Provide training and guidance to internal teams on IP-related topics, including trade secret protection, open source, and patent strategy.
Manage and supervise a small team of seasoned IP specialist (e.g., patent agents).
Requirements
7+ years of experience in intellectual property law, preferably with a mix of law firm and in-house experience.
Strong background in software and technology-related IP matters, including patents, trade secrets, open source, and copyright.
Experience managing global IP portfolios and working with patent and trademark offices worldwide.
Proven ability to advise technical and business teams on complex IP issues in a practical and solutions-oriented manner.
J.D. from a U.S. law school and membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
Ability to balance legal risk with business goals in a fast-paced environment.
Nice to Have
Experience in the life sciences or SaaS industries.
Knowledge of data privacy and regulatory issues related to intellectual property.
Experience with AI and machine learning-related intellectual property matters.

Compensation
Base pay: $150,000 - $250,000
The salary range listed here has been provided to comply with local regulations and represents a potential base salary range for this role. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range above or below, depending on experience and location. We look at compensation for each individual and base our offer on your unique qualifications, experience, and expected contributions. This position may also be eligible for other types of compensation in addition to base salary, such as variable bonus and/or stock bonus.
