We’re looking for our next Principal Cloud Platform Engineer. Could It Be You?

As a Principal Cloud Platform Engineer at our company, you will be at the forefront of developing and advancing our core cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and tooling essential for the Questrade Cloud Platform. This role is pivotal in delivering self-service capabilities to our engineering teams, enabling the seamless onboarding and operational efficiency of cloud-native applications. Your responsibilities include leading the implementation of critical infrastructure components such as Google Kubernetes Engine, Istio Service Mesh, container provisioning engines, and managing configuration and secrets alongside Terraform modules for robust infrastructure provisioning.

In this strategic position, you will work closely with project and architecture teams, applying your deep expertise to influence the design and execution of our cloud infrastructure. Your leadership will be crucial in shaping the organization's cloud roadmap, aligning infrastructure development with both present and future business needs. Furthermore, you will guide and mentor your team in the delivery of mission-critical cloud platform components and services, thereby supporting the broader enterprise objectives.

In this role, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Visionary Technical Direction: Lead the charge in setting "Production Quality" benchmarks, pioneering sophisticated cloud infrastructure with a focus on Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and rigorous automation practices to uphold a culture of technical excellence.
  • Infrastructure Design Leadership: Take charge of cloud infrastructure planning and execution, performing comprehensive architecture evaluations. Address essential elements such as system availability, performance, security, and cost efficiency, with an eye on current needs and future scalability.
  • Innovation and Process Enhancement: Spearhead initiatives to streamline and enhance processes, leveraging opportunities to advance automation and refine DevOps methodologies.
  • Technical Strategy and Insight: Offer critical insights during strategic planning sessions, influencing the technical trajectory and advocating for continuous improvement. Ensure that technical plans are in perfect alignment with the organization’s strategic ambitions.
  • Development of Superior Tooling: Lead the creation and ongoing improvement of self-service tools for cloud infrastructure and Cloud Native Application CI/CD Pipelines, providing developers with powerful, modern solutions.
  • Expert Mentorship and Guidance: Emerge as a guiding light for the team, sharing expertise, and providing coaching on design patterns, technical best practices, and emerging technologies.

  • Proven experience in DevOps methodologies, emphasizing continuous integration, continuous delivery, and automated testing to improve the software development lifecycle.
  • Skill in strategic planning with the ability to marry technical initiatives with overarching business goals, ensuring technological efforts bolster business achievements.
  • Expertise in crafting high availability and disaster recovery plans, aimed at bolstering system reliability and application resilience.
  • Strong background in cloud security practices, including the creation of IAM roles & policies, security groups, and management of encryption keys for comprehensive security.
  • Significant experience in designing and maintaining solutions on major public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), with a dedication to architectural best practices.
  • Proficiency in container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, with an emphasis on Kubernetes orchestration, preferably Google Kubernetes Engine.
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD pipelines and automation tools, focusing on improving and streamlining development and deployment processes.
  • Competence in programming with languages like Python, Golang, or Bash, adhering to high standards of code quality and maintainability.
  • Extensive experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools, including Terraform, CloudFormation, or Cloud Deployment Manager, to manage infrastructure efficiently and effectively.
  • Experience or strong familiarity with Linux operating system administration, including an in-depth understanding of Linux internals such as signals, scheduling, and filesystems.
  • Robust knowledge of TCP/IP networking principles, applicable to both cloud-based and on-premises environments, including DNS, network architecture, routing, and an understanding of L3/L7 protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability in designing and implementing solutions in a microservices architecture, with a focus on creating resilient, scalable software systems.
  • Practical experience in agile development settings, utilizing methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban to enhance team productivity and project delivery.
