Job Summary:

The Utility Engineer will be responsible for reviewing utility engineering designs and construction work plans to ensure they comply with American Railway Engineering Maintenance Association (AREMA) standards and all railroad-specific regulations. This role requires technical expertise in utility design, strong attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with engineering, real estate, and project management teams.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Review utility designs, engineering plans, and construction work plans for compliance with AREMA and railroad standards.
  • Utilize railroad client valuation maps and GIS data for calculating mileposts and stationing.
  • Provide structured feedback to the Real Estate team and utility applicants within the defined timeline.
  • Escalate variance requests to the Manager or client per standard operating procedures.
  • Develop a strong understanding of real estate agreements, permits, and construction requirements.
  • Build relationships with client engineering departments to facilitate project coordination.
  • Track all submittals and responses in designated project management systems.
  • Attend and participate in applicant meetings, conference calls, and client discussions.
  • Escalate complex issues to the Manager of Utility Engineering as needed.
  • Work closely with project managers, real estate specialists, and protection service teams.
  • Conduct limited field observations on project sites before, during, and after construction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business operations.
Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective planning and time management in high-volume, time-sensitive projects.
  • Proficiency in site grading, utility, drainage, pipeline, and wireline design.
  • Familiarity with hydrology/hydraulic calculations.
  • Experience with Stormwater Management Plans (SUSMPs, WQMPs, SWPPPs).
  • MicroStation proficiency is a plus.

 

Required Education & Experience:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 0-2 years of experience in utility engineering design and construction plan development.

 

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Field engineering or design support experience during construction.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Experience in site development and transportation/utility projects.
  • 2+ years of project management experience with railroads, transportation, or utility companies.
  • 2+ years of experience in client/customer service and engineering plan interpretation.
  • Proven ability to manage high workloads efficiently in fast-paced environments.

Additional Compensation: Based on qualifications and experience, the salary range for this position is $67,000 - $75,000 per year.
