Department Overview
Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs (GUEA) provides leadership and support for efforts that advance UC equity and inclusion, that promote access to and successful completion of baccalaureate and graduate degrees, and that help to provide an exemplary student academic experience.
Position Summary
The MESA Deputy Director develops strategies and priorities for MESA programs and services statewide including the MESA College Prep Program (MCP), the MESA University Program (MUP) and the MESA Community College Program (MCCP). The Deputy Director provides leadership, guidance and oversight to the local MESA campus directors ensuring alignment with statewide priorities. The position reports to the MESA Executive Director and serves as the Executive Director's chief of staff and primary liaison to MESA campus program sites, intersegmental institutions, schools, and community partners.
This position can be hybrid or is eligible for a remote work arrangement within the state of California, and with ability to travel as needed for work-related purposes. The selected candidate must reside within the state of California or be willing to relocate.
Responsibilities
- 65% Leadership and direction for MESA statewide programs: Serve as the lead expert on MESA’s statewide program capacity, strengths and weaknesses. Provide guidance and expertise to MESA program sites on system-wide priorities and requirements for UC outreach activities generally and SAPEP funding specifically. Develop recommendations and proposals to guide and support MESA’s broader strategic direction. Serve as a liaison to MESA campuses (including CSU, Community Colleges and AICCU campuses), the MESA USA consortium, and other agencies/organizations that partner with MESA programs. Provide guidance and oversight for MESA’s statewide and national initiatives such as MESA Day student competitions, the National Engineering Design Competition, MESA’s Student Leadership Conference, the Idea Accelerator Project, and MESA’s Corporate Mentoring Program. Provide guidance and oversight to two statewide staff members to coordinate MESA program sites, organize regular meetings and annual convenings for campus MESA directors and coordinators, and provide assistance to MESA campus sites in the preparation of their MESA Annual Program Plan (MPP) and supporting documentation. Prepare information, analyses, briefings and reports about the program. In cooperation with MESA Corporate Partnership, Marketing and Communications leadership, help define the needs of local MESA directors in the area of fundraising and corporate relations. Foster strong collaborative relations between the programs and corporate supporters.
- 15% Leadership for professional development and training: Independently develop and implement ongoing professional development in-service training and technical assistance to program directors and staff in center administration and program implementation strategies including the development of short and long-term plans for continuous program improvement. Conduct ongoing research on current trends and models in educational reform, teacher training, and parent involvement in education in order to act as a point of reference for program directors in the field. Support campus directors to incorporate, as practical, prevailing methods in mathematics, science, engineering and computer science education. Provide training and orientation activities/material for new center directors and other appropriate center staff. Provide guidance and oversight for MESA’s statewide and national teacher/advisor training activities.
- 15% Program Strategic Planning and Assessment: Lead statewide strategic planning efforts that result in high quality programs and services that maintain the MESA vision/philosophy while anticipating major shifts in academic preparation policy and resources at the state and federal levels. In consultation with the MESA Executive Director and in collaboration with the MESA senior management team, lead an annual goal setting process for all MESA program sites. In collaboration with MESA campus personnel, conduct ongoing qualitative and quantitative assessments of program centers and personnel; provide timely, written status reports and makes specific recommendations regarding program improvement to the MESA Statewide Office, to program directors and their faculty sponsors; participate in MESA Statewide staff meetings, and provide written documentation of quarterly work plans, monthly activities and travel reports to MESA Statewide Executive Director. Provide regular, ongoing assessment of program effectiveness to the Statewide Executive Director and Center Personnel based on comparative studies and pre-determined, measurable objectives for the purpose of planning and implementing program improvement and compliance at each site.
- 5% Program Documentation: Develop protocols and standards for fund distribution to, and data collection, outcomes tracking and reporting from MESA sites to ensure alignment with system-wide priorities. Provide guidance and support to two statewide staff to ensure that reporting and data collection protocols are executed effectively and in a timely manner.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of senior management experience in program development and operations in math/science education and/or diversity education.
- Expertise with the MESA pre-college and college level program models, preferably as a result of serving as a MESA site director or as the director of an equivalent academic preparation program.
- In-depth knowledge of access and equity issues for underrepresented groups in math and science education at the national, state and local levels.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with a wide variety of local and statewide constituencies.
- Outstanding analytical, political, verbal and writing skills.
- Expertise in developing programs, creating and executing long and short-term strategic plans and implementing policies.
- Able to travel frequently.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive coursework (preferably a Master's degree) in mathematics, sciences, public education, social science, business administration, or related field.
- In-depth knowledge of access and equity issues for underrepresented groups in math and science education at the national, state and local levels.
Travel Requirements
25% Required travel includes campus visits throughout California, student competitions, student and staff convenings, and UC and professional conferences.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
