Job description

Our mission
Carbon removal, alongside emissions reductions, is absolutely essential to preserving a stable climate. We’re focused on addressing the knowledge, policy, and ambition gaps that are holding us back from a carbon removal ecosystem that delivers real progress on climate change.

Leadership from European countries - including the UK - is critical, both for ensuring that carbon removal can reach the scale necessary to achieve global climate goals, and for ensuring that a progressive vision of carbon removal can emerge that is not dominated by fossil or other corporate interests.

Europe needs carbon removal in order to:
  1.   meet its net-zero targets
  2.   address its historical emissions that are already in the atmosphere causing warming
Carbon removal needs Europe because no other region has both the financial muscle and the political will to scale crucial new climate solutions. Europe needs carbon removal, and carbon removal needs Europe, but neither has a dedicated and honest voice speaking for carbon removal on behalf of the climate. Carbon Gap will be that voice.
The role
Carbon Gap is an independent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) advocate in Europe, driven by a team of policy professionals and scientific experts dedicated to advancing CDR solutions. Based in Brussels and London and connected to key European capitals, we have rapidly established ourselves as a thought leader in both policy advocacy and scientific research. Since our launch at COP26, our influential policy papers and thought leadership have resonated across the climate and mainstream media, underpinning our decades-long mission to make Europe a global leader in carbon removal and support its net zero commitment.

We are expanding our team of experienced professionals and are looking for a Senior Social Media & Communications Specialist to enhance our digital presence and help articulate our CDR message to a wide-ranging audience. In this role you will work alongside our existing communications team and senior leadership, taking a hands-on approach in all our digital and social media initiatives. We will support you in leveraging your skills to bring our mission to life across Brussels, the EU and beyond.
Responsibilities
You will be accountable for managing our digital communications and social media channels, as well as contributing to our broader strategic vision. We are looking for a doer that can push our (social) media presence into the stratosphere. In this role you will:

Be a Digital Strategist:
  • Refine and implement a comprehensive social media strategy to amplify our CDR message across Europe.
  • Collaborate with the advocacy and research teams to ensure that our digital content aligns seamlessly with our overall advocacy and policy objectives.
  • Monitor digital trends and adjust strategies to maintain our position at the forefront of innovation.
Deliver High-Quality Digital Content:
  • Create engaging, clear and accessible content across multiple platforms—including social media, blogs, newsletters, and press releases including both the copy and visuals.
  • Distill complex policy and research data into simple and accessible graphics, infographics, figures and charts as well as text.
  • Translate complex scientific research, policy proposals and technical data into messages that resonate with policy makers, industry leaders and the general public.
  • Previous experience working with video and audio is a big plus.
  • Ensure all communications adhere to our brand guidelines and high quality standards.
Build and Manage Relationships:
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media contacts, influencers and policy stakeholders across Europe.
  • Proactively engage with both specialised and mainstream media to secure opportunities such as interviews, OpEds and feature articles.
  • Coordinate with external agencies and internal teams to maximise the reach and impact of our digital initiatives.
Be a Proactive Project Manager:
  • Coordinate digital campaigns and manage multiple workstreams, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within scope.
  • Utilise analytics tools to monitor campaign performance and refine strategies accordingly.
  • Provide guidance and support to colleagues, fostering an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Experience working within a Scrum Agile environment is a big plus.
Your profile
  • You have more than three years experience directly in social media and digital marketing, ideally within the climate, energy or environmental / sustainability sectors. This is a hands-on role and requires previous direct experience in running social media channels.
  • You are a natural communicator with a proven track record in developing and executing successful digital campaigns and communications strategies.
  • You have a strong understanding of the European policy and media landscape, along with a relevant network of media contacts and influencers.
  • You are adept at distilling complex information into clear, engaging and impactful messages that resonate with diverse audiences.
  • You are comfortable using emerging digital tools and analytics to drive strategic decision-making and optimise content performance.
  • You are passionate about climate action; while you need not be an expert in carbon removal, you must have a strong desire to contribute to our mission.
  • You thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects concurrently with a high level of attention to detail and be comfortable with some level of context switching.
  • You are a relationship-builder at heart, proactive in establishing and nurturing connections both internally and externally.
  • If you have a strong understanding of the European policy and media landscape, along with a relevant network of media contacts and influencers, that will be considered a big plus.

In your covering letter, please include short paragraphs on the following:
  • Knowledge about the field of CDR or climate and energy.
  • Examples of communications and marketing strategies on social media that you have developed, with evidence of their success.
  • Your approach to tackling complex topics and how you distil them into clear, impactful messages for policy makers, stakeholders and the wider public.
  • Your proficiency in English, and if English is a second language, evidence of at least a C1 level.
What we offer
  • A full-time work contract (40h/week)
  • Competitive salary package, including benefits such as lunch vouchers (for Brussels based positions), pension plan, medical plan and reimbursement of public transport
  • Dynamic and supportive team with amazing colleagues and regular team socials
  • Modern offices situated in the heart of the European district of Brussels
  • Hybrid working regime
  • Opportunities for training and personal development
Carbon Gap is an equal opportunity employer. We are dedicated to broadening opportunities for groups that are underrepresented in the climate and carbon removal spaces, and to building an inclusive team where people of different backgrounds can thrive. We strongly encourage applications from people who do not see themselves represented in the current climate ecosystem. If you feel like this description matches you and are able to do so, please mention it in your covering letter, and we will guarantee you an interview.
You don't need to meet all the requirements to be considered and we know you might need to grow into the role. If you feel like this role is the right one for you, please don’t hesitate to apply.
