East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities.

East Side House’s Early Childhood programs provide Early Head Start and Head Start services in a safe, supportive, educational environment for children aged 18+ months to 5 years of age.  Serving 231 children daily from five locations, the comprehensive program is designed to develop the cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills of children in a safe, supportive environment. Children and families receive a broad range of educational, nutritional, social and preventive health services. Our staff foster partnerships with families so that they can support school learning and achievement as well as advocate for their children and themselves. We expect that all staff will work collaboratively, and with the community, to promote school readiness while creating a safe, healthy and protective environment.

 

Duties include, but are not limited to the following key activities:

 

Participants and Families:

  • Conduct initial interview with participant/family for intake and assess participant/family needs and strengths
  • Make in-depth assessment using various age-appropriate assessment tools. Assessment will include home visits and input from program personnel.  The thorough assessment will identify psychosocial factors causing stress to the participant and her/his family.  Based on this assessment, an intervention plan will be created.
  • Provide short-term supportive counseling and to alleviate crises for participant and families as necessary
  • Conduct an affirming, motivational family assessment that will serve to excite families about the possibility of support in goal attainment
  • Build strong relationships with families to facilitate collaborative approach to participant support, and coordinate the delivery of mental health and family services at community organizations for participants and families outside of the organization
  • Serve as an internal liaison to link participants and families offered throughout ESH’s programs (i.e., child care, after school, school-based programs, workforce, post-secondary, etc.)
  • Provide and facilitate bilingual workshops to parents on interest areas surveyed during assessments (i.e. bullying, financial management, life skills, etc.)
  • Design and implement creative interventions for participants with repeated instances of similar challenges

 

Agency and Community:

  • Lead mediations as necessary using relational-based models within social work practice and in alignment with ESH’s commitment to Restorative Practices
  • Create interagency and external partnerships to further department/organizational goals
  • Support with recruitment efforts and agency representation during community outreach and advocacy efforts
  • Attend meetings as needed and advocate/schedule meetings as necessary
  • Participating in assigned staff development trainings
  • Organize and lead three community events annually (resource fair, community giveback, etc.)

 

 

 

Support Services and Data Collection:

  • Maintain paperwork in a timely fashion: assessments, case notes, monthly reports, data input/forms
  • Facilitate Professional Development curriculum for interns and peers and provide consultation on social-emotional related issues to staff.
  • Develop scope and sequence and unit plans for SEL lessons
  • Work collaboratively with program leadership to plan and execute Social Emotional Learning Time (SELT)

 

Manage social work intern program:

  • In partnership with the Department Director of Social Services, oversee sourcing, recruitment, selection, and onboarding of undergraduate and graduate interns
  • Provide one on one supportive supervision and evaluation for interns
  • Collaborate with undergraduate and graduate schools to facilitate mutual learning/learning exchange
  • Coordinate with director to assign client referrals to interns

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • New York State LMSW from an accredited school of social work
  • SIFI Certification strongly with at least one year’s experience supervising social work interns
  • Knowledge of the network of social services available to parents and families in New York
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Interest in and comfort with working with data informed practice

Supervisory Responsibility

This position supervises social work interns.  

Work Environment

This job operates in a classroom setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The role varies according to the classrooms schedule. Some activities may include but not limited to jumping, bending, lifting, etc.

 

Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s program needs.

 

Remote Work

Travel

Travel may be necessary from one site to another for staff coverage purposes.
