Technical Director – Renewable Structural

About the Position
As the Director in the Renewable Structural group, you will be responsible for providing technical oversight and leadership for the Renewable Structural group within NEI’s Renewable department. At NEI, a director is responsible for managing a functional group of teams practicing in a specific area of design or industry. The Director will be accountable for developing and enforcing departmental standards, best practices, and quality. Thus, the Director should expect to spend around half of their time on management, leadership, and business development tasks, while the other half of the time is spent in the technical details (standards development and high-level QA/QC). The Director will also be responsible for managing, scheduling, and prioritizing project staffing needs, mentoring Team Leads and Engineers and fostering an inclusive environment.
This opportunity is available to both local / in-office (Lakewood, Colorado) and full-time remote candidates.
Essential Responsibilities
- Accountable to group performance on five primary metrics:
- Quality - Manage and support of team members, team leads, and group-specific technical consultants to execute and deliver high-quality engineering and design deliverables, calculations, specifications, and submittals to clients and internal stakeholders
- On-time schedule – Director to manage and support teams to ensure on-time delivery of engineering and design submittals to clients and internal stakeholders
- On budget – Director is accountable for supporting and managing of group phase managers in the completion of contracted scope to the labor hour budget allocated. Director is responsible for the accurate estimation and allocation of budget labor hours for engineering fee proposals
- Client satisfaction – Director is responsible for the management and mentoring of group team members to instill high levels of customer service and support in line with the companies values and mission of prioritizing customer success
- Team health – Director is responsible for the management of group team members to ensure the well-being and engagement of team members by fostering a positive work environment where individuals are happy in their roles, are supported in their career development and learning, actively support team culture, and collaborate effectively with one another and to other team members within the renewable department.
- Manages quality and deliverables across multiple teams ensuring client satisfaction and timely completion of project deliverables
- Develops, outlines, updates, and implements Standard Best Practices (SBPs) and enforces them to ensure high-level execution from various team members
- Reviews the work of engineers, designers, drafters, and field service personnel for general quality and ensures accuracy as required
- Spearheads interviewing and onboarding new team members within the group
- Provides oversight and direct management of multiple teams
- Manages team utilization and forecasts workloads based around project sizes and scope
- Reviews and manages documentation around financial statements, including, but not limited to, revenue, gross margins, write-offs, COGS, overhead expenses, and net income
- Is able to coordinate, manage, and oversee multiple projects with multiple clients simultaneously to ensure effective delivery of primary responsibilities
- Serves as a mentor to Team Leads and Engineers across teams
- Participates and engages with the Business Development team to provide technical guidance, pricing details, and scope to ensure cross-functional alignment
- Facilitates a seller-doer model to maintain existing client relationships and build new ones.
- Prepares a variety of documents and reports associated with projects including cost estimates, budget reports, and studies
- Maintains professional understanding of all applicable Codes and Standards, and construction practices
- Assists with client contacts and communication
- Performs other duties as assigned
Must Have
- Experience: BSCE or BSCET from an accredited institution, civil, structural, or mechanical option preferred
- Education: 5+ years of engineering or relevant field experience, 3+ years of engineering management experience
- Licensure: PE required, SE preferred
- Extensive experience producing full structural engineering design packages including:
- HV Substation foundation, steel, and structures
- Utility scale PV foundations, steel, and structures (driven pier, concrete, fencing)
- Utility scale BESS foundations and structures (driven pier, helical pier, concrete, fencing)
- Expert with STAAD, LPILE, AutoCAD
- A strong understanding of structural analysis: including steel, wood, and concrete design
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and Project
- Professional, articulate, and able to exercise good independent judgement and discretion
- Highly organized, motivated self-starter
- A strong written and verbal command of the English language
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
- Proven record of delivering a high standard of quality work with attention to detail
- Demonstrates effective written and oral communications skills; including good interpersonal communication and relationship building skills; ability to interact successfully at all levels of the organization; high emotional intelligence

Team Member is responsible for managing their own work schedule with input from their supervisor and completing assigned tasks.
Team Member is responsible for the review of project related financial statements, team utilization and forecasting, and project oversight when necessary. The Technical Director will also be responsible for management and oversight of Team Leads and Engineers assigned to their discipline.
