Major Responsibilities:
  • Serves as an integral component in coding operations and is responsible for setting the tone and expectations for behavior and customer service for team while ensuring the coding teams meet the daily turnaround time while maintaining the quality of coding.
  • Accountable for development and implementation of effective remote onboarding program for new coders.by determining the optimal delivery method and tools for coders in a remote environment.
  • Manages each new coder progression and competency against onboarding program timeline. Participates in collaboration touch points between the trainer, supervisor and the trainee on a regular basis ensuring set goals and competencies are met.
  • Works with management and quality team to track and trend, identify deficiencies and provide one on one training to coders as needed. Creates job aids that support the learning needs of remote onboarding for coders. This includes creation of tools like query templates that are used for effective coordination in the physician follow-up process.
  • Confirms competency of coders to transition out of reviews on coding scope (e.g., work queues, service codes). Confirms progression of coders from onboarding program to independency. Responsible for creating and disseminating training materials to existing hospital coders, enterprise wide, to ensure accurate and consistent coding, reporting and benchmarking. This includes but is not limited to coding guidelines, tip sheets and updates.
  • Submits and organizes responses to/from AHA Coding Clinic/CPT Assist and works with quality team to update guidelines. Identifies and makes accommodations for individual learning needs, adapting modalities when required. Initiates a mechanism for the coders to deliver feedback, remotely, that ensures effective communication and learning. Collaborates with outside departments such as charge master, Revenue Assurance, Clinical Documentation Improvement, Patient Accounts and other units to determine educational needs, writes content and educates as needed. Education may be remote, on site etc., to meet the need of the trainee. Collaborates with the Manager(s) of Knowledge and Hospital Quality to ensure coding education is consistent and education is relevant and timely. Ensures goals are met by clearly communicating job expectations, and monitoring and assessing productivity and quality results. Ensures that the budgets are met by maintaining production turnaround and limiting overtime and contract.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which include interviewing and selection of new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
  • Develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
  • Health Information Administrator (RHIA) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and
  • Health Information Technician (RHIT) registration issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Health Information Management or related field.

Experience Required:
  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in progressive coding leadership experience in a high volume environment. Includes 1 year of supervisory experience in leading physician coding, documentation and/or auditing functions.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
  • Experience in managing projects preferred.
  • Experience managing internal and external relationships.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills.
  • Experience with remote work force operations required.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a proven record of data driven results.

  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Generally exposed to a normal office environment.

Pay Range

$40.30 - $60.45
