Job Summary:

The Sr Director of Benefits and Wellbeing provides strategic vision and design input on programs and policies and operational excellence for the oversight of all benefits and wellbeing programs.  Oversees the center of expertise functions including governance of plans and programs through the Benefit’s Shared Services Team including administration of all policies and programs for health and welfare, wellness, absence management, and retirement benefit programs. This role leads project plans to routinely assess the effectiveness of plans while providing functional expertise to deliver people initiatives that support and foster a high-performance and inclusive culture. promoting employee wellbeing and maintain compliance with applicable regulations. This position collaborates across departments to deliver competitive and innovative solutions that enhance employee engagement, retention, and organizational performance, and manages multiple vendors through SLA’s and operations reviews. The position reports to the SVP of Total Rewards.
**This position will work from their home office with travel expectations to the Chicago, IL headquarters quarterly for on-site collaboration and department meetings.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic vision and design input to the overarching strategies, implements, and manages comprehensive health and welfare benefits, retirement programs, and wellness initiatives, including medical, prescription drug, vision, dental, life, AD&D, disability, absence management, FSA, and defined contribution programs.
  • Design and leads multiple program plans to drive wellness programs that foster a culture of health, improve employee engagement, and address organizational well-being goals.
  • Routinely evaluate benefit and wellness offerings to ensure competitiveness, value, and alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Provides vendor management oversight to multiple vendors ensuring strong performance with designed SLAs, reviewing performance of SLAs through routing operating reviews.
  • Maintain compliance with policies, regulations, and reporting requirements, including overseeing audits and preparing state and federal filings.
  • Oversee benefit programs’ financial integrity by implementing robust controls and ensuring accurate recordkeeping. Establish and monitor budgets.  Prepare financial reports with cost and trend data to support efficient and effective delivery of benefit programs.
  • Partner with outside consulting/brokerage firm to prepare executive summaries for sponsors and Executives, including financial summaries, budgets, expense and variances, as well as suggested solutions.
  • Lead annual open enrollment project from beginning to end, including plan design updates, development of change management materials and communication strategy, system updates, and employee education campaigns.
  • Create year-round communications to promote benefits and wellness offerings, increase awareness, and address employee inquiries.
  • Support due diligence and integration of benefit and wellness programs in mergers and acquisitions to ensure seamless transitions.
  • Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise team members and influence them to take positive action and accountability for assigned work.
  • Partner with HR, Legal, Finance, and HRIS teams to optimize administration, ensure compliance, and integrate Workday functionality.
  • Develop and implement a well-being philosophy, strategy and well-being events for all employee audiences.
  • Maintain and monitor audit controls over all benefits programs.
  • Monitor administrative costs and pricing of benefits programs and recommend cost containment strategies, including alternate methods of administration.
  • Be a champion of innovation in the benefits and wellbeing space.  Know what best in class, progressive companies are doing and look to integrate best practices into the processes.
  • Proven success in designing and managing wellness programs aligned with organizational goals.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree or HR certification preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of HR experience, with at least 5 years focused on benefits and wellness program design and administration.
  • Experience implementing and administering benefits programs in Workday.
  • Expertise in multi-state benefit regulatory requirements, including ACA, ERISA, COBRA, and HIPAA compliance and other local regulatory requirements.


Required Skills and Abilities: 

  • Experience in design and implementation of benefits and wellbeing programs across multiple geographies.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver innovative and competitive benefits and wellness programs.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with advanced expertise in MS Excel.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage employees at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across functions and influence key stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with change management and communication principles.
  • Technical knowledge of benefits design including H&W and retirement plans.
  • Proven, influential leadership skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with a variety of key stakeholders; consultative and collaborative style that allows for influence without authority.
  • Ability to operation in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Flexible and comfortable to roll-up your sleeves, accustomed to being hands-on. 
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills – both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset by staying curious and continuously learning, embracing challenges, and improving themselves.


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to travel 10% of time; may fluctuate based on business needs
  • Majority (90%) of work is conducted indoors in air-conditioned or well-ventilated facilities.
