The Systems Engineer at UDT is a customer-facing role focused on managing and optimizing server and cloud infrastructure, particularly in Linux environments. Responsibilities include supporting UDT's MSP team, maintaining server and cloud ecosystems, provisioning services, automating tasks through scripting, and ensuring system reliability, performance, and availability for UDT customers.

The ideal candidate will be an expert in Linux systems, automation, and cloud infrastructure, with a passion for providing exceptional customer service and technical support. This role will involve both technical troubleshooting and hands-on management of servers and cloud platforms, as well as consulting with customers to optimize their systems and services.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer and maintain Linux-based servers, cloud environments (AWS, Azure), and hybrid infrastructures. Responsible for capacity planning of these ecosystems, monitoring for performance issues and applying critical security updates. Some examples of key areas follow in bulleted form.
  • Maintain and manage the centralized web filtering system used by UDT customers.
  • Support virtualization environments, with an emphasis on KVM/Libvirt), and containerized applications (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Maintain DNS, and other mission critical network services hosted on server infrastructure.
  • Act as an escalation point for advanced technical issues, providing guidance to junior engineers and ensuring timely resolution.
  • Act as the technical lead for customer-facing support, ensuring the resolution of complex issues and providing expert-level assistance on Linux, cloud, and automation-related matters.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance automation scripts (using tools such as Ansible, Puppet, PERL, Python, Bash and shell scripts) for system configuration, patching, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Provide consultation to clients on best practices for infrastructure, security, and performance optimization.
  • Ensure the infrastructure is secure and compliant with industry standards and customer requirements (e.g., HIPAA, PCI-DSS, GDPR). Implement security best practices across server and cloud environments, including firewalls, IDS/IPS, encryption, and access controls.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for systems, processes, and automation scripts.

Qualifications:

This position requires 5+ years of experience managing and supporting Linux servers and applications, including application design and environment maintenance. Candidates must have a strong understanding of virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM, Hyper-V, Xen) and proven experience with containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes). Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl) and familiarity with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef) are essential. Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Icinga/Nagios, Prometheus) and a solid grasp of networking fundamentals (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, routing, VPNs) are required. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment, meets deadlines effectively, and works independently with minimal supervision.
