Job description

Summary

The Domestic Violence Law Project (DVLP) was established by Safe Horizon in 1991. Since its inception, DVLP has provided high-quality legal advocacy and representation to thousands of low-income and indigent battered women in family justice proceedings such as order of protection, custody, support, and divorce proceedings; DVLP also advocates for clients within the criminal justice system.

Safe Horizon’s Family Court Program offers case management and practical assistance to victims of crime and abuse. The overall goal of the program is to reduce the impact of victimization through advocacy, case management, and support services. The 2 Project Coordinators will provide case management and legal services to high-risk victims of domestic violence across all five boroughs who are referred to DVLP or who are involved in the family court system via Safe Horizon’s Family Court Programs.

Essential Job Functions

Providing client-centered crisis intervention, emotional support and case management to high-risk victims of crime and abuse, with a focus on the Safe Horizon Family Court Programs in all five boroughs, on both an in-person and remote basis.

Operating the DVLP Hotline by returning messages, interviewing & screening callers, answering questions, providing legal and other information, and making appropriate referrals. Providing information regarding the Family Court process, court procedures and the types of relief available, including Orders of Protection, child custody, visitation, and support.

Making referrals as needed to DVLP Staff Attorneys and Supervising Attorneys for consults and representation.

Working closely with DVLP attorneys to ensure their clients receive client-centered, trauma-informed and holistic services as they navigate through the civil and criminal justice system.

Inputting client information, statistics and case notes into Safe Horizon’s Case Management System and maintaining thorough and accurate case records and statistics.

Additional Job Functions

Advocating with Family Court personnel (Judges, Court Clerks, Court Officers, and other civil legal, defense and housing attorneys, etc.) and the criminal justice system on behalf of clients.

Safety planning and risk assessment.

Connecting clients to emergency practical assistance including shelters, compensation, transportation, food vouchers, financial assistance, emergency cell phones, lock replacement.

Attending internal and external meetings, trainings and workshops.

Assisting the Supervising Coordinator with Spanish language translation for DVLP attorneys

Various other administrative duties to be determined by supervisor

Interacts With

Family & Supreme Court Staff, Clerks, and other Personnel

Family Court Program Staff

Family Justice Center staff

NYPD & District Attorneys’ Offices

NYCHA and Section 8 staff

Local social service and legal service providers, such as the defense attorneys and housing attorneys

Required

Knowledge and Skills:

Sensitivity towards and understanding of victimization, especially the experience of survivors of domestic violence, including criminalized survivors.

Strong communication and organizational skills.

Ability to work under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner.

Ability to work as part of a team while also independently generating tasks.

Experience working with survivors of domestic violence and other victims of crime.

Experience with the criminal justice/civil legal systems.

Bilingual In Spanish Or Another Language Strongly Preferred

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Hiring Pay Range: 25.82 - 29.05 Hourly

Full-time Hours: 35 Hours per week
