Job description

about us: at battleface, we’re building the world’s first humanity-focused travel insurance company to bring people and the world closer together. Why? Because for far too long, travel insurance has been stagnant, complicated, and unappealing. We’re changing that. How? By connecting travelers to customized insurance solutions that deliver peace of mind with relevant coverage. This means you get the right insurance at the right price—exactly when and where you need it. Backed by some of the biggest partners in travel, battleface makes buying and using travel insurance simple and seamless.

about you: you're someone who thrives on organization, loves data, and enjoys diving into policy details. You’re meticulous and use tools like spreadsheets to plan every aspect of your next holiday. You believe insurance should be straightforward and accessible, while respecting underwriting and regulatory guidelines. Using data, you can anticipate customer needs and contribute to designing the right products for the future.

the role: We’re all about the customer’s journey, both literally and figuratively. At the heart of that journey lies our technology platform, where we assess risk, provide emergency medical assistance, pay claims, and connect to travelers.

We're a global organization, working with leading local insurance capacity providers. In the UK and EU, battleface operates as a coverholder at Lloyd’s while partnering with prominent digital insurance companies.

We custom-build products for our customers and partners and need an experienced Travel Insurance Underwriter to join our team. You’ll be responsible for developing and leading the underwriting strategy for travel insurance products, ensuring relevance in an ever-changing travel environment.

At battleface, titles define roles, but working collaboratively as part of the team is key to driving our rapid growth. Specifically, you'll:

  • Develop and manage the travel insurance portfolio, forecasting appropriate products and rates to achieve profitability, retention, product mix, and business growth goals
  • Develop and monitor policy wordings, underwriting rules, and guidelines
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and industry obligations in the UK and EU
  • Analyze and evaluate data from diverse sources to make sound underwriting decisions
  • Provide premium, IBNR (Incurred But Not Reported), and claims forecasting internally and to carrier partners
  • Manage product, rate, and wording development, utilizing underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premiums
  • Understand pricing components and rating methodologies
  • Perform ongoing competitive analyses
  • Collaborate on new product and partner implementations
  • Participate in monthly loss analysis, claims payment planning, reserves, and contribution transfers

essentials:

  • 5+ years of insurance and underwriting experience, preferably in an A&H or travel role
  • Independent, entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to manage a portfolio with minimal supervision
  • Ability to collaborate with a global underwriting and actuarial team across time zones
  • Proven track record of developing profitable business and driving growth
  • Experience writing and executing underwriting and reinsurance referrals
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to recommend product and rating adjustments
  • Familiarity with Lloyd’s underwriting environment, including delegated authority experience
  • Innovative mindset, contributing positively to battleface’s culture and morale
  • Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills

the perks

  • 100% remote working with occasional travel within the UK (primarily London) for meetings as needed
  • Private medical insurance

  • Travel insurance for you and your immediate family
  • Birthday day off, in addition to 28 days of annual leave and bank holidays
