Job description

Job Title: Senior Earthing Design Engineer

Salary: £60,000 per annum (negotiable based on experience)

Location: Manchester (Hybrid Role) – Flexible remote working with occasional office visits

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Overview: We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Earthing Design Engineer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in earthing system design and experience working alongside Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and projects aligned to UK DNO Grid Codes. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure projects while enjoying the flexibility of a hybrid working environment.



Key Responsibilities:
  1. Earthing System Design:

    • Lead the design, analysis, and modelling of earthing systems for electrical infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

    • Perform detailed analysis using industry-standard tools such as CDEGS, AMTECH, or similar software.

    • Deliver calculations and designs for electrical substations, renewable energy projects, HV/LV systems, and grid connection schemes.

  2. Compliance and Standards:

    • Ensure all designs comply with UK Grid Codes, BS EN 50522, BS 7430, IEEE 80, and other relevant international standards.

    • Collaborate with DNOs such as National Grid and other regulatory bodies to ensure adherence to requirements and specifications.

  3. Technical Documentation:

    • Produce detailed technical reports, drawings, and specifications for earthing systems.

    • Provide engineering calculations, risk assessments, and documentation to support project delivery.

    • Conduct technical reviews of peer and junior engineers’ work to ensure accuracy and quality.

  4. Project Management and Delivery:

    • Manage earthing design elements for multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery within budget.

    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical engineers, civil engineers, and project managers.

    • Provide technical support to clients and stakeholders during project lifecycle.

  5. Site Support and Surveys:

    • Conduct site surveys, soil resistivity tests, and assessments to inform earthing designs.

    • Support the commissioning of earthing systems and troubleshoot issues as required.

  6. Mentorship and Leadership:

    • Support and mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering professional development.

    • Act as a subject matter expert for earthing design within the organization.



Key Requirements:
  1. Educational Background:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a similar related discipline.

  2. Experience:

    • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in earthing design. 

    • Working knowledge of UK DNO rules and requirements. 

    • Expertise in HV and LV earthing design for substations, transmission, and distribution networks.

  3. Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in earthing analysis tools like CDEGS (preferred) or equivalent software.

    • Strong understanding of UK and international standards

    • Familiarity with soil resistivity testing equipment and methodologies.

  4. Soft Skills:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

    • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team.

  5. Other Requirements:

    • Full UK driving licence (preferred for occasional site visits).

    • Right to work in the UK.
