Job Summary

The merchandise planner is a proactive collaborator responsible for developing and managing the company's product inventory by analyzing sales data, forecasting demand, and collaborating with the merchandising team to ensure the right amount of product is available at the right time, maximizing sales while optimizing inventory levels and profitability, through creating detailed assortment plans, seasonal merchandise plans, managing open-to-buy, and identifying trends to inform purchasing decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Forecast customer demand, using a blend of quantitative data analysis and market intelligence to predict sales trends and inform inventory decisions.
  • Measure and improve forecast accuracy for the major business verticals.
  • Develop seasonal merchandise plans, including assortment strategies, pricing, and promotional calendars, aligned with business goals.
  • Manage the "open-to-buy" budget, determining how much inventory can be purchased within a given period to meet sales targets while controlling inventory levels.
  • Monitor inventory levels, identify slow-selling items, and implement strategies to optimize stock turnover and minimize excess inventory.
  • Conduct Quarterly Hindsight analysis to understand which strategies worked, which didn’t and what will be done differently.
  • Work closely with the merchandising team to communicate sales forecasts, sizing, product assortment needs and delivery timing.
  • Close collaboration with the Finance, Supply Chain and sales teams
  • Generate reports on sales performance, inventory levels, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to provide actionable insights to leadership and the merchandising team.
  • Maintain inventory turns and stock to sales ratio by vertical and allocation strategy, determining the optimal replenishment cadence by vertical
  • Support the Director of Planning on deliverables for key milestone meetings and strategies.
  • Research and identify process improvement opportunities, including by not limited to forecasting software enhancements and internal workflow changes.
  • Gather data, analyze data, and choose action plans based on findings. Present in cross-functional meetings.
  • Collaborate, effectively communicate, and guide peers and cross-functional partners

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business, merchandising, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in merchandise and demand planning. Shoe Experience Preferred.
  • Knowledge of merchandising concepts, including assortment planning, pricing strategies, and promotional planning.
  • Understanding of retail math and financial principles
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Self-starter with ability to prioritize and pivot with ease and flexibility
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex data
  • High Proficiency in Excel, retail planning software and data analysis tools
  • A strong sense of curiosity and integrity
  • Sound judgment and ability to navigate through ambiguity
  • Attention to detail
  • Driven by a sense of urgency and able to prioritize work to maximize your impact
