Description

As a Crisis Response Specialist you will have an opportunity to address the most pressing health and wellness needs in Native American communities. You will coordinate crisis support services to a portfolio for Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) school staff, students, and families. The BIE BHWP provides culturally relevant, evidence-based, and trauma-informed behavioral health and wellness services for school staff, students, and families at all Bureau-funded institutions, including Bureau-operated schools, Tribally Controlled Schools, post-secondary institutions, and Tribal colleges and universities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintains a positive working relationship with Bureau of Education (BIE) schools’ administrators, point of contact, staff, and students.
  • Work collaboratively with the 24/7 crisis hotline to identify and coordinate appropriate services for individuals in crisis.
  • Obtain and follow impacted school/institution’s emergency or crisis response plan/protocol for individuals with high-risk behavior or needing a higher level of care.
  • Communicate with BH Crisis Lead to ensure linkage, integration, and seamless delivery of all crisis support services and 24/7 Crisis Support telephonic services.
  • Document communication with point of contact and/or student in secure platform.
  • Screen and communicate student and staff safety concerns with crisis response team, Counseling Lead and Crisis lead.
  • Assist with crisis after-care plan to ensure students and staff are receiving supportive services, as needed.
  • Adhere to patient confidentiality and comply with program policy, state licensure guidelines, and federal regulations under the privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Develop and continuously update crisis resources in each state for student and staff support.
  • Participate as an active member of the BIEBHWP Crisis and On-call Team.
  • Participate as a member of counseling team.
  • Provide training & technical assistance (TTA) to a portfolio regarding the prevention of substance use/misuse, prevention of suicide, promotion of mental health, and behavior management skill building.
  • Conduct webinars, conference calls, telephone support and email with the BIE audience.
  • Assist the BIE audience in strengthening existing services and/or building infrastructure for prevention efforts.
  • Attend all required staffing, meetings, and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and expertise in crisis support services, substance abuse prevention, suicide prevention, and/or youth suicide risks.
  • Proven ability to provide evidence-based crisis assessment and intervention virtually and in-person.
  • Skilled in prioritizing complex problems quickly and responding appropriately to crisis situations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of crisis response issues/culturally appropriate intervention techniques.
  • Proven ability to form positive, effective, and culturally competent relationships with clients and team members.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and deliver quality results under tight deadlines, with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both individually and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, SharePoint, Smartsheet, Adobe Connect, and database management.
  • Strong skills in written and verbal communication, assessment, advocacy, and crisis response.
  • Ability to provide on-call and after-hours service as needed.
  • Ability to travel on short notice to provide on-site crisis support.
  • Will be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Must be able to obtain and maintain a background clearance.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in social work, social science or closely related field.
  • 1-2 years of relevant work experience, which includes crisis response services for children, youth, and adults.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with the Native American/Alaska Native community highly preferred.
