As the preeminent international service organization of the United States, the Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad to work with communities and create lasting change. Volunteers develop sustainable solutions to address challenges in Education, Health, Economic Development, Agriculture, Environment and Youth Development. Through their Peace Corps experiences, Volunteers gain a unique cultural understanding and a lifelong commitment to service that positions them to succeed in today's global economy. Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 240,000 Americans of all ages have served in 142 countries worldwide.
The Treasure Beach Women’s Group Benevolent Society (TBWG) in Jamaica has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as an Environment Support Specialist. TBWG is a very active community organization running several projects for the advancement of women and the wider Treasure Beach community. The recent passage of Hurricane Beryl has significantly increased TBWG's awareness of the need for more environmentally friendly practices and disaster mitigation activities. As a result, TBWG would like to increase their role in improving the environment for climate & disaster preparedness reasons; and to strengthen the capacity of the TBWG youth group to be the future leaders of TBWG and of their community.
The PCRV will train and mentor members of TBWG’s youth group to become ‘ambassadors for the environment’ carrying out a campaign of raising the awareness amongst other young people in the community to the major environmental and climate-related challenges facing the community of Treasure Beach. The PCRV will also assist them to develop a 2-year campaign work plan and start the implementation of the first phase.
Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Jamaica together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
