How can you make an impact?
As the
Senior Product Owner of Data Solutions, you will play a pivotal role in shaping McGraw Hill's platform strategy and delivery for the higher education market, with a specific focus on transforming our Data Solutions strategy. This senior position requires a visionary influencer who can bridge the gap between advanced data technologies and practical educational solutions. You will be responsible for driving innovation by creating new opportunities to monetize data solutions and services, new data-driven platform experiences, enabling our AI capabilities, and ensuring that our platforms deliver exceptional value to administrators, educators and students alike.
This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States and requires up to 25% travel for the year.
What you will do:
Strategic Leadership:
- Partner with your director to determine product team priorities, investment strategies, and KPIs tied to usage and quality of data-driven platfrom experiences and services. Identify and evaluate new market opportunities, conducting feasibility studies and risk assessments for new data-enabled product lines or experiences and revenue generating data as a service business models.
- Own and develop comprehensive investment business case supporting data-enabled platform strategy, including: Detailed financial forecasts with ROI projections, definition of both leading and lagging KPIs, creation of compelling presentations for executive approval, development of operationalization plans, execution oversight and milestone tracking.
- Create and maintain a 3-5 year market-focused development roadmap that enables platform strategy, creates positive impact for MHHE, and delivers. customer value. Champion our platform vision across the organization, acting as a thought leader in data services in support of teaching and learning.
Data Strategy:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive data strategy that supports platform initiatives, including: Data collection methods and storage architectures, data quality, hygiene and governance frameworks and integration of disparate data sources across the organization.
- Oversee the creation and management of customer data profiles to drive personalized learning experiences, including: definition of key data points to collect, development of data models for student performance prediction, Implementation of privacy and security measures in compliance with regulations (e.g., FERPA, GDPR), collaborate with data science /AI teams to identify opportunities for leveraging advanced analytics and machine learning, such as:
- Adaptive learning algorithms
- Recommendation systems and predictive modeling
- Automated grading and feedback mechanisms
- Stay abreast of emerging trends in AI and data science, evaluating their potential application in educational contexts
Platform and Product Development
- Partner with product owners on conceptualization and development of new platforms, products and features, with a focus on data-driven and AI-enhanced solutions.
- Partner with technical and product leaders to align strategy and platform investments across the organization, ensuring coherence with overall technical architecture.
- Ensure the seamless integration of data solutions into our broader platform ecosystem, including: overseeing API services and management, data flow optimization between different platform components, performance monitoring and optimization of data-intensive features, Collaborate with UX/UI teams to create intuitive interfaces for data visualization and AI-powered features
Market Research and Customer Insight
- Own market and user research to gain a deep understanding of customer needs, challenges, and motivations in the context of data-driven educational solutions.
- Analyze market segmentation and competitive landscape, with a particular focus on emerging trends in educational technology and data analytics.
- Conduct regular customer interviews, surveys, and focus groups to gather qualitative insights
- Utilize data mining and analytics tools to extract actionable insights from user behavior data.
Team Management
- Directly manage and mentor one Product Owner for Data, providing guidance, support, and opportunities for professional growth.
- Conduct weekly 1:1 meetings with your direct report to discuss progress, challenges, and strategic alignment of data initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with your Product Owner to ensure cohesive execution of the data strategy across products and platforms.
- Perform regular performance reviews and set clear, achievable goals for your direct report, aligning their objectives with broader organizational goals.
- Identify skill development opportunities for your Product Owner and provide or facilitate necessary training and resources.
- Act as a coach and mentor, helping your direct report navigate complex product decisions and stakeholder relationships.
- Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and data-driven decision making within your small but crucial team.
- Encourage cross-functional collaboration, facilitating strong working relationships between your Product Owner and other departments.
We’re looking for someone who has:
- Bachelor's degree, an advanced degree is preferred.
- 5-10 years' experience in product management or related field.
- Experience managing and delivering multiple projects to deadline and budget simultaneously.
- Experience with and desire for frequent customer/user interaction.
- Professional experience designing and conducting user research plans.
- Experience managing vendors and working within budget.
- Data-driven mentality with focus on analyzing and synthesizing financial, usage, and/or research data to understand market trends and product performance to create data-informed strategies.
- Certification as an Agile product owner and/or demonstrated success managing software platforms and tools with significant growth or revenue responsibility.
- Technical degree or equivalent experience working with engineers to make product decisions on behalf of customers.
- Experience delivering highly complex software products with intuitive user experiences from inception to launch.
- Professional knowledge of data analysis software such as Tableau and/or Alteryx.
- Experience with Google Analytics, Web Trends or Salesforce reporting.
- Strong technical understanding with the ability to establish credibility with engineers
- Experience in accessibility & WCAG guidelines.

The pay range for this position is between $70,000 and $125,000 annually, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
