Job Purpose :

  • The Contract Manager on projects advises the Project Manager on contract strategy (prime contract with the client, after award) and ensures contract management activities all along projects. He/she :
  • Is responsible for the delivery of contract management services and strategy from early projects phase until contract close outs.
  • Provides the principal contract support and leads the contract management activities (including client contracts and potential partnership arrangements (such as JV, Consortium), when applicable).
  • Prepares and consolidates complex analysis of contract conditions, risks and opportunities, and develop associated contractual strategy.
  • Deals with contractual issues, anticipates risks and grasp opportunities.
  • Manages the interface between the project and the other legal functions.
  • Could manage a small team: depending on assignment and profile, the function may include management of a contract engineer
  • The Contract Manager is assigned on all Operating Centre’s projects, with a level of involvement depending on size and complexity of such projects. He/she is mobilised in Lyon office (600 persons, 130 M€/year turnover) with potential business trips either at site where the work is being conducted or at Paris Operating Centre.


Reporting lines and interactions:

  • Hierarchically reports to the Local Contract Management Department Manager.
  • Could directly supervises contract engineer, as appropriate.
  • Internal key interactions: mainly Project Managers and also many other functions/departments (engineering, procurement, planning, cost control, finance, legal, compliance, insurances…).
  • External key interactions: clients, partners (joint venture/consortium), external advisors, project third parties.


Job Accountabilities :

The Contract Manager will be directly involved in the Operating Centre projects, encompassing FEED (Front End Engineering Design), EPs/Cm (Engineering and Procurement services / Construction management) projects, mainly under reimbursable scheme (sometimes lump-sum services). Scopes of such projects extend from Energies (Liquefied Natural Gas, Green H2, bio jet) to Chemistry (Polyolefins, Plastic Recycling, bio chemicals, chemicals and Petrochemicals) and Life science, with multiple different clients.

The Contract Manager supports the Department Manager to:

  • Implement locally the Group Contract Management processes, rules & tools.
  • Sensibilize, train and educate Operating Centre staff to the Contract Management.
  • Collect feedbacks from Operating Centre staff on their contractual issues and actively share lessons learnt and/or prepare and present analyses to address them.
  • Protect and pursue T.EN’s interests and contractual rights.
  • Maintain T.EN’s liability exposure under strict control.

At the early phase of the project (after award), the Contract Manager shall:

  • Prepare (or support the preparation of) a consolidated analysis of the Contract Terms and Conditions of the prime contract with the Client to highlight the areas of risks and opportunities to be pursued.
  • Develop and/or review critical project specific procedures.
  • Monitor timely adherence by T.EN and by the Client to contract provisions (insurances, bonds, certifications, operational, etc) and coordinate any actions required in this regards with other T.EN departments.


During the project development, the Contract Manager shall:

  • Provide appropriate support and guidance to the Project Manager and leadership within the Project team in the management and administration of the contract, consistently with the relevant policies, standards and processes.
  • Participate in project meetings (including Monthly Project Reviews), as appropriate.
  • Initiate, draft and/or review, as the case may be, all incoming and outgoing correspondence with clients, partners, major subcontractors and vendors and, where applicable, with third parties.
  • Initiate and coordinate the preparation, negotiation and settlement of change orders, extension and time, and claims towards the client.
  • Keep an eye on the schedule performance and cost trends in order to identify risks and opportunities for revenue enhancement, schedule relief and risks mitigation.
  • Assist the procurement/purchasing team on critical matters (consistency between purchasing General Terms and Conditions and the prime contract, complex clause analyses, correspondences drafting, amendment, claims, etc…).
  • Administer and protect T.EN contractual and commercial interests vis-à-vis project partners (when applicable).
  • Liaise and obtain when required legal expertise from the Legal Team (corporate, compliance, Intellectual property, insurance, litigation, general legal advice), from other functions (treasury, tax, etc.) or from external advisors with the purpose of providing the project team with a comprehensive set of legal and contractual services.


Important requirements:

  • Engineering school, Master’s Degree, MS/MSc, or equivalent.
  • Proven minimum 10 years relevant experience in large Energy, Chemistry or Pharmaceutics Company or Infrastructure contracting FEED/EPs/EPsCm with various companies.
  • Proven experience in similar or comparable job position.
  • Strong knowledge of contractual/legal terms and conditions
  • Prominent written and verbal communication in French and English.
  • Hands on knowledge and experience in schedule analysis methodologies and Extension of Time claims.
  • Good understanding of Project Management, Planning, Risk Management and Cost Control.
