Job Description Summary The Lead Mechanical Engineer has experience and can independently manage the production and delivery of all MEP Engineering design documents. The Lead MEP Engineer is accountable for the on time and on budget execution of Engineering Firms hired to complete the design works for Substation Buildings that include HVAC system, Fire protection systems, plumbing and building electrical for turnkey projects.
The Lead MEP provides support to engineers in completing design from the concept phase to project close out, supports the site related construction activities and performs quality reviews of submitted work.
Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or is focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results.
The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).
Job Description
Main Responsibilities
- Managing Engineering subcontractors and self-performing calculations requires extensive experience in designing HVAC, cooling/heating systems, heat recovery, mechanical energy efficient systems, fire protection systems, pump stations, mechanical piping, plumbing, water distribution, sanitary systems, drainage systems and basic building electrical systems for different types of buildings or prefabricated enclosures/buildings in electrical substations.
- To design and review work, the senior engineer must have working knowledge of relevant standards and codes.
- Support tendering teams in preparation of technical documents, project execution planning, and estimates related to mechanical engineering discipline.
- Prepare bid packages to engage engineering firms for the detail mechanical design of Balance of Plant (BOP) work scope.
- Evaluate offers, conduct technical reviews, and provide recommendations on selection of engineering firms for project execution.
- Responsible for managing and closely monitoring all MEP engineering works during project execution adhering to quality, schedule, and safety in design metrics.
- Act as the key team member to coordinate with other disciplines and architects to ensure seamless integration of MEP systems with building design.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities, challenging designs by others, and conduct engineering value analysis for major systems, especially HVAC systems, for buildings in electrical substations or industrial facilities to provide the best & optimized solution for the project.
- Coordinate efficiently with all other GE Engineering disciplines.
- Provide a detailed review of all mechanical submittals including calculations and shop drawings from contractors.
- Conduct site visits and inspections as needed.
- Assist in technical meetings with the client and lead meetings with sub-contractors.
- Produce Bills of Materials, technical specifications, procedures, and conduct estimation exercises for major mechanical systems.
- Accountable for related site/design return of experience, drive lessons learned documentation & design validation.
- Ensure compliance with quality procedures, work instructions, and processes defined at projectand region level. Resolve non-conformances in a timely manner. Ensure quality procedures are planned, followed, and documented and support quality audits.
- Act as a point of contact GE contractors, the customer, and the customer’s contractors for all mechanical systems.
- Review and approve calculations using formulas and/or software programs for validation of calculations ex heating and cooling loads, equipment sizing. Knowledge of software used for all mechanical, HVAC, and Fire Fighting systems.
- Reports to Senior Engineering Manager Operations for NAM.
Qualifications
- Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Minimum 5 years experience in building HVAC and MEP
- Minimum 5 years experience in the design/engineering of mechanical systems for buildings in High Voltage Substations, HVDC converter plants, and/or industrial plants.
- Ability and willingness to travel 25% of the time, including international travel, and follow GE travel and tax policies.
Desired Characteristics
- Advanced certificates is a plus (eg. LEED, PMP).
- Professional Engineering license required.
- Knowledge of project execution risks and financial processes in EPC environment.
- Demonstrate ownership & accountability, judgment and decision making and has passion for the role.
- Strong Mechanical Technical knowledge for MEP manufacturer/vendor products including HVAC, BAS systems, valve cooling systems, coolers, and pump skids.
- Experience in Plant design.
- Strong knowledge of local building codes, NFPA/ANSI/IEEE, regulations, permitting, and industry standards related to MEP systems.
- Proficiency in using MEP design software programs, Autocad, office suites, tools, and 3D modeling.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience working directly with customers.

The salary range for this position is 93,600.00 - 124,800.00 USD Annual. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location.
