Job description

The College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a remote Technical/Grant Writer for the WV Grant Resource Centers.

About The Opportunity

The West Virginia Grant Resource Centers are a collaborative partnership between West Virginia University (WVU) and Marshall University (Marshall) established to help small communities and other eligible applicants maximize federal and private dollars from grant applications to support economic development initiatives across West Virginia. The focus is on the pre-award process to help communities, not-for-profit organizations, and other eligible applicants identify funding opportunities, put together competitive proposals, and submit complete application packages. The WV Grant Center at WVU seeks a Technical/Grant Writer with proven ability to work on several projects simultaneously on tight deadlines; facilitate meetings; understand technical writing, deadlines, and regulations; use creative problem-solving; and design and develop projects. The ideal candidate will have an interest or expertise in outdoor recreation and community development projects. The WVU Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative will be a strategic partner. A professional, team-oriented mentality and strong written and oral communication and research skills are a must. Some travel is required.

What You'll Do

  • Provide technical assistance to eligible applicants and support with the identification of funding opportunities.
  • Develop materials to aid in the proposal development process, including templates for project narratives and letters of support/commitment; summaries of notices of funding opportunities/broad agency announcements/request for proposals/funding opportunity announcements; letters of intent; and other written correspondence.
  • Facilitate meetings, seminars, and workshops on the grant writing process regularly.
  • Manage the preparation of grant proposal packages and support eligible entities throughout the proposal submission process.
  • Liaise and interact with private foundations and federal funding agencies.
  • Interpret funding opportunities, write project narratives, and develop budgets.
  • Guide and assist eligible applicants in filling out grant application forms for funding by federal agencies and foundations and uploading documents into submission sites (e.g., grants.gov).
  • Create and maintain project budgets.
  • Complete a plethora of grant writing resolutions such as white papers, requests for proposals/qualifications, and more.
  • Maintain meeting records, project files, and other documentation needed for project management and reporting.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, English, Journalism, or related field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience with the grant process, proposal development and submission, and/or project management, or other relevant experience. Candidates with a connection to the state are preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Must be a highly motivated, energetic individual equally capable of working independently or in team settings.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and facilitate meetings.
  • Ability to quickly acquire knowledge of policies and procedures and applicable regulations mandated by different foundations and federal agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize a variety of tasks and complete them in a timely manner.
  • Database management skills.
  • Knowledge of current community and economic development trends.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
