Organizational Mission:

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

Position Summary

The Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF) Project Manager will report to the LRF Senior Project Manager and be part of the team responsible for implementing deferred maintenance projects across the Appalachian Trail in New England. The LRF Project Manager will support National Park Service partners in carrying out the facility asset subprojects. The Legacy Restoration Project facility asset types include maintained landscapes, boundary, campsites, shelters, privies, bridges, parking areas, wells, and tread. The ATC LRF Team will exclusively lead the tread and maintained landscapes portion of the overall project. This is a one-time, 3-year project and this position will be funded until approximately the fall of 2028.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contribute as part of the core ATC LRF project team developing project scope, prioritization, data collection and implementation strategies.
  • Lead the scoping process for assigned tread and maintained landscapes subprojects including hiking to project sites for data collection and validation and developing treatment plans and Class A cost estimates to implement project construction phase.
  • Support National Park Service partners in the scoping and data collection process for other asset types.
  • Lead the development and submittal of environmental and cultural compliance packages per federal/state/local requirements for each scoped subproject.
  • Manage and oversee project implementation including developing Requests for Proposals, seeking quotes, selecting contractors, and supervising contractors through contract completion. 
  • Oversee the contractors in the field throughout all phases of the project.
  • Provide technical support for construction and rehabilitation projects.
  • Contribute to fieldwork plans for LRF Staff. Attend LRF Team meetings with existing ATC staff and new LRF staff; develop agendas, action items, follow ups.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and or 1-2 years of project management experience.
  • Applicable project management experience is required.
  • Extensive experience with New England trail construction and maintenance required.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently with excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic scope of work that often requires creative problem solving.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 suite and ArcGIS Pro or other GIS software.
  • Familiarity with the A.T. community, hikers, volunteers, natural resource management and park/land management preferred.
  • Moderate use of Microsoft Office suite is required.
  • Ability to adapt to new systems quickly.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Frequent travel to meetings and project sites within New England.  
  • Weekend work may be required. 
  • Flexibility to work long hours during deadlines or special event periods. 
  • Frequent field work in remote backcountry areas, varied weather conditions, and exposure to various pests and wildlife is possible. Field work will sometimes require carrying 10-30lb loads.
  • Must be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts. 
  • Hybrid (flexible schedule depending on season and point in the project).

Additional Details: 

  • Full-Time 3-year TERM position average of 35 hours a week.
  • Salary: $54,000-$58,000.00.
