Reports to: Manager

General

A supervisor should be involved in most of the areas for which partners are responsible. Supervisors should have complete knowledge of the firm's philosophy and policies and maintain expertise in the profession. A supervisor is a liaison between the partner, client and staff.

Essential Performance Functions

  • Performs technical tax review and approval of all tax returns and governmental tax examinations of any complexity.
  • Takes responsibility for the quality of the team’s work product. Properly staffs projects and sets budgets. Assumes full responsibility for the accurate and timely completion of the overall project.
  • Takes a leading role in the development of senior and staff accountants. Serves as a resource when team members encounter difficult technical or ethical issues. Makes adequate time and resources available to support learning objectives of self and others. Contributes to the learning environment by instructing at training events.
  • Assumes responsibility for smooth flow of tax returns through the tax preparation system to insure accurate, complete and timely preparation and delivery of all clients’ tax returns.
  • Maintains knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.
  • Develops strong technical knowledge. Requires a minimum amount of supervision. Consistently turns in work that needs little or no revision. Seen by partners as being able to handle the most complex assignment for the firm’s biggest and/or most difficult clients.
  • Develops an expertise in an industry and is viewed as a go-to person for that industry within the firm.
  • Builds strong relationships with clients. Understands the clients’ business and their needs. Is proactive in providing service. Is recognized and respected by clients as a knowledgeable and valued professional. This is evidenced by (a) client usually calls the supervisor instead of the partner, (b) receives unsolicited compliments from the client and (c) sells additional services to clients.
  • Builds strong relationships and enjoys a high level of credibility with the partners, managers and staff. Functions effectively in a team environment. Does what is best for the firm, not the individual.
  • Interacts directly with clients and/or targets in marketing or business development events. Participates in the development of ways to meet client needs. Actively participates in professional, business and/or community organizations. Builds, maintains and utilizes network of client and non-client relationships. Identifies opportunities for expanded services to existing clients. Supervisors should allocate at least 100 hours per year building and maintaining their network.
  • Passionately pursues exceptional client service.
  • Productivity: Approximately 1,575 annual billable hours at acceptable realization levels.

An Excellent Supervisor:

  • Sets a positive example by providing timely, meaningful verbal and written feedback.
  • Helps others adapt and remain productive through change and slow periods.
  • Directs others so that performance issues are addressed in a timely manner, counsel’s team members in areas of weakness to help improve the overall efficiency of the team.
  • Develops specialized technical expertise in one or more areas and acts as a resource in those areas.
  • Identifies, anticipates and resolves technical issues within the context of the client’s business.
  • Builds, maintains and utilizes network of client relationships. Understands the importance of business development and does their part.
  • Is organized
  • Takes notes of assigned tasks and completes the tasks in a timely manner the first time. Tasks can be defined in large (tax returns, other projects, etc.) or small (actions to take that are mentioned in casual conversation) terms. He/she should always be prepared to take notes in order to follow up on any tasks assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills required:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Proficiency with computer, spreadsheet software programs and calculator.
  • Well rounded knowledge of accounting principles and personal income taxes
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
  • Holds a current and valid certified public accountant’s license is preferred but not required
