LOCATION:  This is a remote/home working position based in Bolivia

CONTRACT: one year - part-time (3 days a week) contract with the possibility of extension

REMUNERATION: In Equality Now we strive for global pay parity and offer a competitive salary in line with the candidate's experience and location. The salary for this role in Bolivia would be from $28,185 - $35,232 USD pro-rata for 3 days per week (Level 2 role).

POSITION SUMMARY

The Legal and Advocacy Advisor will play a pivotal role in Equality Now’s campaigns in Bolivia and at the regional level of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), on the issues of sex/gender equality in the law, including sexual violence laws and family, religious and customary laws; and enabling access to justice for victims and survivors of gender-based discrimination and abuse. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership:

  • Support in strategizing, implementing, and evaluating Equality Now’s campaigns to promote legal equality and an end to sexual violence, with particular responsibility for the Bolivia campaign;
  • Identify and lead on opportunities to lever change through international and regional law in Bolivia and the Region;
  • Represent Equality Now in national coalitions and at conferences and meetings;

Legal and Advocacy:

  • Together with Equality Now staff, conducting training on international and local/regional human rights standards relating to women’s rights and violence against women;
  • Contributing to the drafting of submissions to UN Treaty Bodies, UPR and other global and regional mechanisms;
  • Litigating and/or supporting the litigation of cases locally and at regional and international mechanisms;
  • Working closely with local partners to assist with legal drafting and litigation strategy;
  • Developing advocacy strategies with local partners on violence against women, including sexual violence;
  • Contributing to the drafting of Equality Now’s reports and thought products;
  • Participating in drafting recommendations for Governments on legal and policy changes on violence against women, particularly sexual violence.
  • Map out clear advocacy strategies, monitor progress, and advise on adaptation depending on national and regional context
  • Contribute key messages for communications, actions, alerts and reports and letters to key influencers and government authorities
  • Engage through correspondence and meetings with relevant national government and agency officials on active campaigns and leverage the support of global and regional actors 

Partnerships:

  • Develop and maintain close ties with a range of legal actors and civil society partners in Bolivia and the Region to share information, seek input and/or encourage joint action

Management:

  • Assist the Regional Representative in the development of program strategies, campaign documents, work plans and budgets as necessary
  • Monitor the work of implementing partners in tracking and following up on work plans, budgets and deliverables for each assigned campaign
  • Generate, collect and collate evidence to demonstrate the efficacy of the work, the challenges, the adaptations and the impact
  • Supervise consultants, fellows and interns as required
  • Provide translation or proofreading as needed

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Knowledge and experience

  • At least 5 years of experience working on human rights issues and violence against women in Bolivia with proven expertise in creating programs and maintaining movement building. Having this experience in other LAC countries or regional work is desirable;
  • A law degree or a master’s degree in gender/women’s rights, international law/human rights law, or equivalent experience;
  • Experience in working with survivors and providing legal assistance;
  • Knowledge of local laws, policies and procedures on women’s rights and violence against women;
  • Experience in advocacy and litigation on women’s rights locally;
  • Experience in litigation at the Interamerica System or UN Treaty Bodies is desirable;
  • Experience in drafting analytical reports and studies on women’s rights and violence against women;
  • Experience coordinating a coalition of legal experts is desirable;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of intersectional feminist approaches, including understanding the experiences and needs of girls, adolescents, young people, indigenous, black, and migrant girls, and girls and women with disabilities;
  • Fluent written and spoken Spanish (native level fluency) and intermediate English required; Portuguese is desirable;
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with a drive for results;
  • Strong experience in monitoring, evaluation and learning.

  • Support capacity building initiatives, including designing of training materials and training, is desirable.
