Overview**
As a Senior Director of Engineering – Store Technology, you will be responsible for leading all aspects of business product engineering for the solutions we run in our 800+ Dicks Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy & Public Lands stores. In this role, you will contribute to the products we create, help grow the next generation of Engineers and Engineering Management talent, and play a leading role in Technology strategy. The Senior
Engineering directors must understand the customer and market, instill a sense of purpose, communicate a clear vision, build a great team, foster healthy team dynamics, set clear goals, establish high expectations, and coach individual contributors and managers. The Senior Director generally has responsibility for an organization of 40+ Teammates (Managers, Senior Managers, Individual Contributors, Leads, Principal(s)) working across multiple teams and in most cases, across business domains. The Senior Director should be an expert in modern Engineering practices such as Lean, Devops, and Agile, and is responsible for developing and enforcing these principles on their team and influencing other
teams across the department. The Senior Director has Technology oversight responsibility and therefore should have domain expertise in multiple areas of the business. **
Strategy & Planning**
- Own the overall technical design and implementation strategy to support Store platforms, including but not limited to,
- Store Checkout (POS), Locate & Replenish, Store Inventory, In-Store Marketing, Task Comms & Labor, Search Browse &
- Select, Store Services, Clienteling, and Custom Products
- Serve as an expert for executive management regarding architecture and technology questions
- Partner with Product Management to define a multi-year vision, strategy, and product roadmap to support the continued growth of Store technologies.
- Works and negotiates with partners on the staffing of skilled engineering positions on product teams
- Has a strong understanding of our product, our market, and the economics of our business
- Contributes to and makes recommendations for strategic plans in support of key objectives in a timely and fiscally responsible manner
- Manages vendor relationships
- Evaluate new technologies for adoption across the enterprise
- Helps to identify and demonstrate emerging technologies for adoption by product teams
- Collaborates with Product Management peers on building a backlog balancing feature development and technical debt management
Delivery & Execution
- Collaborates and pairs with product leadership members (product designers, engineering, and product management) to create secure, reliable, scalable software solutions
- Ensures the solutions delivered are of high quality, support the company strategy, and are integrated with analytics
- Helps define the creation of meaningful dashboards, logging, alerting, and responses to ensure that issues are captured and addressed proactively – raising the bar for Operational Excellence
- Contributes to tools to drive destructive testing, automation, and engineering empowerment
- Participates in Steering Committees, Store Operations Reviews, team channels, etc to drive consistency across the organization
- Identifies and enables ways to improve team productivity and efficiency
- Identifies areas of inefficiency or miscommunication between teams and proactively can address
Support & Enablement
- Fields questions from engineers, product teams, or support teams
- Monitors tools and participates in conversations to encourage collaboration across product teams
- Learns, through reading, tutorials, and videos, new technologies and best practices being used within other technology organizations
- Provides application support for software running in production; joins their team in handling incidents
- Acts as a technical escalation point for the engineers or engineering managers on teams
People
- Provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to directors, engineering managers, and engineers
- Attracts, retains, and develops top talent to build a world-class Software Engineering Team
- Conducts annual and mid-year reviews by reviewing individual development plans and team feedback
- Fosters collaboration with team members to drive consistency across product teams, and finds opportunities to expose engineers to career interests
- Acts as a proponent of modern software development practices
- Guides team members in strategy, alignment, analysis, and execution tasks within and across product teams
- Participates in and contributes to learning activities around modern software design and development core practices (communities of practice)
- Builds relationships with technology leaders at other companies to learn best practices and elegant solutions to common problems
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science or other Engineering with additional job experience
- 10 - 15 years experience
- Expertise in 12-factor methodology
- Exposure to a cloud computing platform and the associated
automation patterns they provide
- Experience with Agile Development and knowledge on Agile
Deployment tools and versioning using Git or similar tools
- Exposure to REST and effective web service design
- Experience in event-stream technologies such as Kafka
- Experience with Point of Sale technologies and broader tech
ecosystem of physical Stores and concepts such as Offline Mode
- Experience in a front-end technology and framework such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AngularJS, ReactJS, and jQuery
Targeted Pay Range: $153,700 - $285,300. This is part of a competitive total rewards package that could include other components such as: incentive, equity and benefits. Individual pay is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
