This role is remote based in the Chicago area.

Come and be part of a team that helps ensure our clients design-in safety into their products. We work with our clients by reviewing their SW and HW designs and analysis to ensure that failure modes that lead to harm are addressed appropriately. We validate our clients' products through testing and verification processes to ensure they are meeting the requirements and intents of the applicable standard. **

Responsibilities**

  • Lead the development, or review, or audit/assessment of safety work products for clients seeking compliance to standards in functional safety and related fields, including IEC 61508, IEC/EN 62061, UL 1998, UL 991, IEC 60730-1, ISO 13849 and other similar standards relevant to systems- and software- engineering.
  • Employ established methods and frameworks, relevant to functional safety and related fields, to lead the engineering development or review, or audit/assessment of safety cases for complex software-intensive systems.
  • (Examples of such systems may include self-driving vehicles, industrial automation systems, battery and energy storage systems in both vehicle and stationary applications, and related systems..) Methods and frameworks may include safety analysis such as FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, safety requirements management, safety concepts such as FSC/TSC work products, system and software architectures, HIL and SIL test, system integration test, vehicle integration test, and system/vehicle validation.
  • Contribute to business development efforts by assisting in the definition of Statements of Work (SOWs) and providing budgetary estimates for client proposal development.
  • Lead client programs by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews.
  • Address client concerns and resolve client issues.
  • Provide technical assistance to clients about functional safety and related technical fields.
  • Projects may include regular travel to client sites and other UL locations.
  • Perform verification reviews or other technical review activities as directed.
  • May represent UL at industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
  • Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.
  • Coordinates laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing the work of Laboratory Technicians and support staff, and establishing completion dates.
  • Coordinates administrative aspects of project management.
  • Serves as Project Handler of record and may sign as Reviewer of record as assigned.
  • Communicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
  • Prepares Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages.
  • Integrate continuous improvement and safety culture in all aspects of the job.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Science Engineering or a closely related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in product development with the application of UL1998, UL991, IEC60730-1, ISO13849, ISO62061, and/or IEC61508.
  • In-depth knowledge of good software architecture and design practices
  • Strong knowledge of hardware architecture and designs, with the ability to read schematics and understand internal and external interfaces
  • Working knowledge of conformity for functional safety standards
  • Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts in use in the area of expertise
  • Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline
