Job description

ABOUT ALTER GLOBAL

Alter is a global VC that finds and supports high-growth tech ventures in emerging markets. Our mission is to catalyze development by supporting visionary entrepreneurs. We find the top tech companies around the world that have the potential to create economic opportunity at scale and support high-character founders who are not only building their companies, they are defying all odds to build their countries and are inspiring others to do the same.

Alter was founded eight years ago out of Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Today, Alter works with 30+ ventures in countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil.

ALTER ENGINEERING FELLOWSHIP

Alter's Engineering Fellowship is open to software engineers, data scientists, and data engineers that are passionate about crafting solutions to technical challenges at scale. Applicants are excited to be embedded in the engineering team at a high-growth startup, developing core technologies that will scale the impact of the business while being immersed in a new culture and geography.

Program structure:

  • Length: Fellows have the option to embark on project-based experiences that can be tailored to the venture as needed, but generally between 6 months and 1 year.
  • Location: Projects can be in Mexico, Colombia, Pakistan, Indonesia, or Egypt.
  • Logistics: Host company will provide Fellows with housing, transportation, and a stipend that will be sufficient to cover living expenses within the country.
  • Reporting: The Fellow will be embedded within the organization and report to the CEO and/or other senior leaders within the host organization.

Potential Projects: Given the broad opportunities to improve and expand the technology supporting the rapid growth of our ventures, Fellows will likely have a range of opportunities and flexibility to design and modify projects in conversation with company leadership. Projects could include (but certainly not limited to):

  • Analyzing the impact of new product launches, monitoring the proper functioning of day-to-day payment channels, and recommending feature improvements for a fintech platform in Africa.
  • Re-architecting an increasingly complex back-end infrastructure of a ride-hailing company in Bangladesh.
  • Working cross-functionally across operations, engineering, data, and design to launch next-gen e-commerce products on platform for a ride-hailing company in Bangladesh.
  • Using big data to guide a Bangladeshi grocery delivery app’s product development, operational workflows, and customer-product interaction.
  • Owning and improving the user experience of a product of an online travel app in Myanmar.

Applications for the Product Fellowship will open starting on November 14th, 2023 — the earlier you apply, the better! The Alter Orientation for the Spring Cohort will take place March 21-23 (location TBD).

Please see our brochure for the Alter Fellowship Program for more insight and info.

ORIENTATION

Fellows are highly encouraged to attend Alter’s biannual Orientation which takes place twice a year: Spring (March) and Fall (September). While participation is optional for Product & Engineering Fellows, Orientation gives the opportunity for Fellows to meet each other and learn more about Alter’s model and partner companies. For Fellows who are unable to attend the biannual training, live/recorded webinars will be hosted to provide key relevant information.

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 2 years of work experience at a top technology company in a technical or product management role, ideally with experience working on a project end-to-end at scale, and leading others in the process.
  • Candidates are not expected to have prior experience in any specific industry or country and are not expected to be fluent in any language except for English (except for some ventures in Latam) - but it is a plus.
  • In addition to an alignment with Alter’s values, an ideal candidate is ambitious, not afraid of risks, persistent, and wants to help transform economies in emerging market.
