Job description

We are looking for a full-time Associate Editor who will collaborate closely with colleagues across departments at Sage to deliver content published in our annual Student Success and Business Skills (Sage Skills) collections. These interactive digital resources are made available to students, faculty, and professionals worldwide through academic libraries. Its content is designed to help students transition into higher education, thrive in their academic pursuits and succeed in the workplace.

As Associate Editor you will be working within Sage’s dynamic Sage Skills Editorial team, commissioning and developing a range of multimedia content designed to increase students’ abilities to succeed in higher education and beyond. As complex products, you will be required to carefully supervise the progress of many moving pieces at different stages of the publishing process.

You will work closely with contributors, editors, and reviewers as they complete their work, as well as collaborate with global colleagues across the business, especially Editorial, Marketing, Production, Product Management, and Sales.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Commissioning experience in digital or print-based product development is preferred but not essential (Candidates who can demonstrate proficiencies acquired through alternative professional experiences are encouraged to apply).
  • Ability to build positive, engaged, and mutually beneficial working relationships with our authors, contributors, reviewers, and other external partners.
  • Experience editing print or digital materials for higher education students and professional audiences.
  • Experience translating ideas into compelling video content is a plus but is not required.
  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to delegate effectively.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technical systems and complex processes.
  • Ability to work to tight schedules in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to influence, persuade and negotiate.
  • Strong IT skills, especially the use of the MS Office suite.

Your new role:

Under the supervision of the Acquisitions and Executive Editors, support the commissioning of content published in our Skills collections, delivering on ambitious recruitment and submission targets, and taking responsibility for meeting release dates and workflow tracking.

Lead the peer review process to ensure high quality of content and communicate results with authors.

After onboarding contributors, work closely and frequently with them to ensure that content is submitted to deadlines and developed to meet academic standards and fit with the resources.

Undertake a range of administrative duties that support timely delivery of content to production, including contracting, tracking individual pieces of content, and editing content. Document and report on project progress.

Collaborate with the production, editorial development, and video production teams to ensure timely launch of each collection.

As a systems and process expert, train and support product team members as needed. Find opportunities for greater efficiency in our processes.

Independently represent SAGE Publishing at academic and professional conferences (as required).

Actively participate in departmental and cross-departmental meetings.
