About The Role

The Senior Controller will lead and scale the financial operations of a growing consulting services and IT firm. This role has full functional responsibility for accounting, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, financial reporting, and compliance. In addition to day-to-day operational excellence, the Senior Controller will play a strategic role in supporting company growth, profitability, and operational performance—positioning them as a key advisor to leadership and a potential successor to the CFO.

This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives on both rolling up their sleeves and making high-level financial decisions. The ideal candidate brings deep accounting expertise, operational acumen, and strong leadership and communication skills.

What You Will Be Doing

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Build, manage, and mentor the finance team.
  • Lead performance evaluations, coaching, and professional development.
  • Design and enforce accounting policies, controls, and procedures.
  • Act as a strategic finance partner to leadership and department heads.

Operational Finance

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting functions including A/P, A/R, payroll, and GL.
  • Ensure timely client invoicing and collection, particularly in project- and time-based billing models.
  • Manage payroll operations, ensuring accuracy in garnishments, benefits, and tax compliance.
  • Monitor and manage cash balances, payments, and communications with internal stake holders.

Systems & Processes:

  • Maintain an efficient chart of accounts and ensure system integrity.
  • Lead systems improvements, including potential ERP or accounting system enhancements.
  • Maintain an orderly and audit-ready filing system.

Reporting & Analysis:

  • Produce timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Lead budget preparation and forecast modeling.
  • Provide variance analysis and insight to department leaders and executives.
  • Support project margin analysis, pricing decisions, contract modeling, and revenue projections.
  • Track and present key financial and operational metrics.

Compliance & Controls:

  • Oversee tax filings and compliance in coordination with external accountants.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Manage risk through adequate insurance, internal controls, and policy compliance.
  • Oversee preparation and submission of 1099/1096 forms and other statutory filings.
  • Support external audits and banking relationships.

Strategic Initiatives & CFO Readiness:

  • Collaborate on strategic projects including acquisitions, financing, and long-term planning.
  • Provide financial insight to inform company goals, growth, and profitability targets.
  • Drive automation and efficiency across all finance functions.
  • Act as a thought partner to the CEO, CFO, and board as needed.

What We Want To See:

  • Expertise in GAAP accounting and financial reporting.
  • Familiarity with consulting and/or SaaS revenue recognition and project-based billing.
  • High proficiency with QuickBooks (Enterprise or Online); NetSuite or other ERP a plus.
  • Strong Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience building or optimizing accounting systems and processes.
  • Highly organized with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA strongly preferred, MBA a plus.
  • 7-10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including leadership roles.
  • Experience in a services-based or Technology/consulting environment is highly desirable.
