Job description

In 2013, while many believed that universal internet access was imminent, and the digital learning revolution would soon benefit everyone globally, we made a bold decision and chose to focus on the educational needs of those who didn’t have reliable connectivity. Fast forward to 2025, and a third of the world’s population remains offline, 251 million children and youth are out of school, and many more still lack consistent access to quality digital learning.

Founded by a group of PhD students with a vision of ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to learn and flourish, over the last 12 years Learning Equality has grown from bringing Khan Academy exercises and videos offline to becoming a key player in the education technology landscape. Thanks to our work, over 10 million learners in underserved communities across 220+ countries and territories now have access to transformative digital tools—no connectivity required.

We develop and support offline-first, needs-driven edtech that builds agency for learners, teachers and organizations. Our solutions are  co-designed with the communities we serve to ensure they meet their unique needs. But we recognize that technology alone isn’t a silver bullet, so we also focus on supporting organizations—through our direct assistance or our DIY model—with what they need to foster quality, student-centered learning  in underserved contexts. And we know this proven approach improves learning.

With the support of organizations such as the Hewlett Foundation, UNHCR, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Endless Network, and Swarovski Foundation – to name a few – we are continuing to grow our reach, deepen our impact  and ensure many more under-resourced communities around the world can access and actively foster quality learning opportunities.

We are seeking a Learning and Impact Manager to help us measure and communicate the impact of our work through an exciting phase of our organization’s growth. We’re looking for someone who is excited by the challenge of driving innovation in monitoring, learning, evaluation, and research practices and whose methodology strongly aligns with Learning Equality's mission to bring quality education to under-resourced communities around the world.

Given the nature of this role, we anticipate some candidates may show more alignment with a portion of the job description, or even certain projects. We’re therefore open to this position being either full or part-time. If you feel that you're a strong fit for the entire scope of the role, you are welcome to apply to the full-time position. If you feel that half of the responsibilities outlined below match your areas of expertise, consider applying for a part-time opportunity. Availability and complementary skill sets will guide whether we hire one person or form a part-time team.

This is a remote opportunity and is open to candidates based in any country, with a preference for candidates based in Africa, India, and Europe. Due to the global nature of our work across time zones, this role will sometimes require calls outside of typical working hours and will occasionally (< 10%) involve international travel to the countries where our project partners are located.

What does monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning look like at Learning Equality?

Learning Equality develops an open product ecosystem and collaborates with organizations to enable offline-first, student-centered digital learning in underserved communities. Rather than directly implementing programs, we collaborate with and support organizations to ensure our tools are effectively used to improve learning outcomes.

In this role, your responsibilities will include developing impact strategies to assess and strengthen edtech adoption, analyzing data to inform product development and partner support, and translating research into actionable insights to enhance Learning Equality’s tools and initiatives, and its storytelling efforts. You will contribute to efforts to strengthen community do-it-yourself adoption of Kolibri, co-design student-centered learning programs with implementing partners, build digital and AI literacy, and ensure our edtech solutions remain adaptive and responsive. By working closely with partners, you will help shape evidence-driven strategies to scale Learning Equality’s impact, ensuring that all learners - regardless of connectivity - can benefit from high-quality digital learning.

Impact Strategy & Development
  • Develop and implement Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) frameworks aligned with strategic initiatives and partner needs, such as for a project-based learning program that builds foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Co-develop research studies with partners to assess the impact of student-centered, tech-enabled learning, using experimental and quasi-experimental methods.
  • Strengthen MEL capacity through training, participatory approaches, and the dissemination of Learning Equality’s MEL Toolkit, equipping partners with scalable data collection strategies, survey instruments, and evaluation guides tailored to different educational contexts
  • Enable data-driven decision-making by supporting partners in using teaching and learning data to improve use of Kolibri.
Data, Reporting & Learning
  • Gather and analyze implementation data from our community to inform Kolibri’s product development, to understand how Kolibri is being used in different learning environments as it relates to syncing, installation, teaching practices or content engagement patterns.
  • Develop compelling reports and presentations to communicate program insights and refine outreach, training, and support strategies.
  • Track Kolibri’s global reach in offline learning environments, collaborating with statisticians and internal data teams.
  • Translate research into actionable insights, bridging technical and practical knowledge for internal teams and partners.

Long-term growth in this role will look like taking the lead in shaping Learning Equality’s organizational impact strategy and internal MEL practices, ensuring that our approach to MEL is equitable, data-driven, and deeply embedded in our collaborations.

What does evidence look like at Learning Equality and what sources of data do you have access to?

We derive insights about our model, products, and initiatives from:

  • Learning and teaching data. We receive information about learning-related engagement for both learners and educators - such as the number of active learners or educators, number of lessons created by a teacher, and completion or mastery of exercises - via our Kolibri Learning Platform, but because we operate in challenging offline environments, our learning data isn’t always of the scale and scope you might expect from traditional online learning platforms. With your help, we’ll also be further developing the Kolibri Data Portal, a central online platform for the aggregation, exploration, and reporting of Kolibri learner data.
  • Content analytics. We learn more about use of content in Kolibri - everything from  analysis of the most popular content sources, or how many sources are user-generated - via telemetry pingback data, Kolibri Data Portal, and via Kolibri Studio, our web-based curriculum tool which gives users control over the organization of their materials.
  • Qualitative user research. As an organization and in collaboration with others, we develop instruments for, and receive outputs from, qualitative user research methods, including focus groups and interviews, usability tests, classroom observations, surveys, and more.
  • Partner and peer collaborations. We learn from subject matter experts in all our collaborations and often produce and receive needs assessments, theories of change, log frames, indicators, and other reporting and policy-based instruments.

Through your work with these data sources, you’ll help us build better products, support our user community, and contribute to overall organizational sustainability.

This position might be for you if –

You have...

  • Conducted both qualitative and quantitative research. This includes coding interview data, analyzing survey results, analyzing learner assessments, and using statistical tools like SPSS, Stata, R, or Python.
  • Created and used research protocols with vulnerable populations, especially in the Global South. You can upskill us in equitable research and evaluation practices (such as research with non-native English speakers, human subjects research protocols, participatory action research, anonymization and privacy, safeguarding, and trauma informed research methods).
  • Led program evaluations for edtech programs and used research findings to drive tangible change, such as refining strategies, demonstrating program impact, and shaping collaborations.
  • Translated complex data into actionable insights, creating impact reports, visualizations, and compelling narratives for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborated with partners and facilitated MEL trainings, providing guidance on evaluation methods and data-driven decision-making.

You are…

  • Always making research and evaluation methods more equitable. You understand how inequity and power can manifest themselves through certain research practices or conventions, and you have practical suggestions - whether from formal training, previous projects, personal experience, or trial and error - on how we can start improving our own practices.
  • A persuasive communicator. You believe data can amplify storytelling; you enjoy both evaluating interventions and communicating impact with evidence-based reports, presentations, short briefs, blogs, concept notes, and more
  • Comfortable with a variety of evidence “languages.” Although you may have a preference for certain analytical methods, reporting formats, or evaluative frameworks, you’re comfortable with receiving and sharing information even if others aren’t able to share their contributions in the format that you prefer. You love making these conventions intelligible to others and enabling them to contribute, including partners or teammates with different experiences.
  • Conversant across edtech, K-12 education, and sustainable international development. Whatever your own background and training - and though you may not be an expert in each - you’re able to understand the vocabulary of, navigate common evaluation conventions within, and build community with researchers and practitioners from the worlds of software and technology, education, and sustainable international development.
  • A lifelong learner. You thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, collaborative environment with regular opportunities to learn and apply new skill sets. You’re excited about developing your own research and evaluation practices to address the unique challenges of understanding impact in settings without internet access.

To apply, complete the application below. Please note that we do not require a cover letter and ask that you prioritize answering the questions on the application. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to those received by April 5.

Compensation & Benefits

Our core values guide our compensation and benefits package, just like they guide the rest of our work. We offer the following pay and benefits to US-based employees and supplement rates to provide similar benefits for international teammates who are independent contractors.

SALARY

  • To avoid biases and address historical pay inequities, we use a consistent formula to set our team salaries. Salary is calculated through three factors: a person's role, level of experience, and their work-from-home location. We believe in being transparent about compensation: We will calculate candidate-specific salary ranges based on cost of living at applicant locations, and will share exact rates during introductory conversations.
  • As an example of location-specific rates, the average annual salary for a full-time candidate who is based in the United States would be $91,500 USD, as well as the benefits described below. A full-time candidate based in Uganda would receive an hourly rate of $27.94 USD, for an estimated annual payment of $41,500 USD. This independent contractor rate is calculated to include supplements to compensate for the US-based benefits described below.

HEALTH

  • We cover 100% of your and your dependents’ health insurance, including vision and dental.
  • We offer a monthly wellness stipend to support all aspects of your wellbeing - you can put it towards purchases like a gym membership, running shoes, your monthly multi-vitamins, or National Parks pass.

FINANCES

  • Learning Equality offers a 401(k) plan and contributes 3%, regardless of the amount you contribute, to help you plan for your future. Learning Equality’s contribution increases the longer you work here, up to 7%.

SCHEDULING

  • We are supportive of flexible working schedules. We ask all teammates to make sure to overlap part of their working hours with continental US time zones, for ease of collaboration with existing team members .
  • We know you can do your best work when you are able to take the time needed for yourself and your family. Learning Equality provides 5 weeks paid vacation, 14 paid holidays - including team-wide Fridays off and floating holidays - as well as bereavement and health leave, to be used for physical or mental health care.
  • Four months paid parental leave for parents of any gender, whether you’re a biological, adoptive, or foster parent.

REMOTE WORK

  • We are a distributed team and collaborate online through Slack, video meetings, and other online communication tools. We provide up to $1,000 when you start to help with your initial work from home setup, and pay for your home internet.

GROWTH

  • We’re a team of lifelong learners and we want you to have the workspace setup that is best for you. We budget $2,400 a year per employee to a Constant Improvement fund. You can decide whether to use this budget to upgrade your physical workspace, purchase technological tools to support your work, continue to develop through reading, or perhaps attend a conference to learn alongside peers.

Learning Equality is a small, globally distributed team working towards a world where everyone can achieve their full potential through access to quality education. To achieve this goal we seek and support a team representative of the cultures and ethnicities, genders and sexual orientations, religious beliefs and abilities that are reflective of our global community. The diversity of our team brings strength, creativity, perspective and joy to our work.
