Job Title: Specialist - EHS

Department:  Health & Safety

Reports to: Manager - EHS
Location: Remote, Texas, New Mexico

The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from: $85,900 - $107,375

Job Summary

Avangrid Renewables is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist. This position supports the environmental compliance, health & safety needs of field operations, training, engineering and senior leadership. This position reports to the Avangrid Renewables Health & Safety Manager, as part of the Health and Safety Department within the AVANGRID Corporate HR Group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist plants in identifying hazards and demonstrates methods and solutions to mitigate hazards (including ergonomic hazards) during the performance of maintenance activities. This includes working side by side with plant personnel and recommending risk reduction activities such as: engineering controls, administrative controls, and/or PPE.

  • Assist Plant Managers with the planning and execution of plant drills. Work with local emergency response personnel to enhance the relationships built by Plant Managers.

  • Provide expertise and leadership to foster a comprehensive safety culture and plant personnel behaviors that prevent incidents, injuries, and illnesses. This includes working closely with technicians during the performance of tasks; demonstrating and observing proper procedures/processes; and providing corrective feedback.

  • Facilitate event investigations to identify and document both immediate and root causes.

  • Assist in identifying and removing Loss of Control items to prevent recurrence.

  • Ensure that lessons learned and best practices during event investigations are shared amongst all plants in the region as well as with other Health and Safety Specialists.

  • Participate in the improvement of EHS programs and procedures, the compiling of risk assessments, and the development of an EHS Coordinator training program by gathering data, observations, and feedback at the plant level and relaying it to EHS.

  • Assist field personnel with safety related challenges that arise at generation plants on a day to day basis. This includes working cross-functionally to conduct Industrial Hygiene assessments, design engineered controls with the AR engineering team or work with external experts to best control risk in hazardous work environments.

  • Perform internal EHS audits on plants to ensure compliance with all EHS programs and procedures.

  • Assist field personnel in achieving and maintaining EHS management system certifications (ISO 45001/OHSAS 18001/OSHA VPP).

  • Assist Plant Managers in reviewing safety plans for major work. This includes reviewing contractor programs and contractor training levels to ensure applicable EHS standards are met, reviewing and commenting on work control packages, and providing feedback to Plant Managers as major work plans are executed.

  • Review Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for various plant operations and maintenance tasks to ensure adequate risk control is in place.

  • Provide support and assistance to plants in order to help them prepare for regulatory inspections, and assist plant personnel and inspectors.

  • Participate in and contribute to plant safety meetings, safety committee meetings and the Central Safety Committee Meetings.

  • Provide training on items such as Powered Industrial Trucks, Hazard Recognition and Control, Fall Protection & Rescue, Rigging & Hoisting, and Safe Driving. Provide assistance to the plants in monitoring their training and performing training functions such as Tower Climbing Assessments.

  • Coach employees on the Human and Organizational Performance safety philosophy.

  • Adhere to effective internal controls.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of Power Generation, Power Distribution or Industrial Power experience including a minimum of 1 year of wind industry experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to climb 80 - 115 meter steel towers on a routine basis.

  • Ability to manage multiple, concurrent projects while meeting deadlines and managing priorities.

  • Advanced computer skills utilizing the MS Office Suite and Gensuite.

  • Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schematic, or schedule form.

  • Ability to work in a productive and effective manner while being in a different location from direct supervisor.

  • Possession of comprehensive interpersonal, speaking and writing skills in order to lead and influence personnel; to present technical information and proposed courses of action to members of management; and to conduct regular training courses.

  • Willing to work overtime on holidays, weekends, and on short notice

  • Willing to travel 50% - 70%.

  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

  • Working knowledge of EPA, OSHA and other applicable EHS standards

  • Experience reading, comprehending, and implementing regulatory standards pertaining to EHS.

  • Experience conducting root cause investigations.

  • Willing to pursue accredited safety certifications relevant to the power generation industry.

  • This position will be considered a Routine Climber and as such will need to maintain themselves fit for duty as defined by Section 40 of the Avangrid Renewables EHS Manual.

  • Additionally, weight must not exceed 285 lbs excluding equipment/gear worn when performing job related tasks.

  • If selected for an interview, candidates will be asked to review the functional Job Analysis requirements for a wind technician job and pass a Fit-for-Duty Medical Evaluation after the acceptance of an employment offer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Safety Management software.

  • Candidates possessing more than the minimum 1 year of experience working in the wind industry

  • Wind Turbine Qualified

  • Qualified Electrical Worker

  • Experience as an EHS Coordinator or other safety related professional experience.

  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Utility Safety Professional or other relevant safety certification or Degree.

  • Qualified candidates living in or near a region or area that is central to multiple Avangrid Renewables wind plants and/or a major airport, in order to facilitate timely/emergency response.
