A Brief Overview
Leads, manages and directs medical department of Underwriting operations within US Individual Life (USIL). Oversees and participates in the development of medical underwriting standards, practices and processes that drive RGA's philosophy and statistically sound, data-driven approach to underwriting. Provides administrative and supervisory duties for medical department management including, but not limited to hiring, training, evaluating, and coaching US medical director reports and USIL manual team
What You Will Do
- Provides leadership and medical underwriting expertise to USIL senior management, Medical Directors, underwriting professionals, Actuarial, and Operations. Provides administrative and supervisory duties for medical department management including, but not limited to hiring, training, evaluating, and coaching US medical director reports and the US manual team.
- Provides medical underwriting consultations and assessments, which includes the evaluation of medical factors of proposed underwriting risks while maintaining an acceptable mortality range and evaluation of medical factors in death claims. Serves as the final arbiter for medical case consultation requests using Risk selection methods based on current clinical and insurance medical knowledge; Mortality and morbidity analysis; Analysis from reviewing electrocardiograms, stress tests, , and other diagnostic tests as requested.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive insurance medicine training and education program for underwriters and other insurance professionals both internally and for client companies. Strong role in developing and integrating medical practice policies and the latest medical advances into underwriting guidelines and manuals.
- Has deep understanding of leveraging data and analytics to optimize the use of medical underwriting requirements in both fully underwritten and accelerated/automated or otherwise non-traditional environments.
- Review proposed guideline additions and revisions from client companies in conjunction with actuarial counterparts to ensure that they are both medically sound and within correct pricing parameters.
- Consistently engage client medical directors to demonstrate insurance medicine expertise and gauge satisfaction from their reinsurance partner.
- Represents RGA Re, as a leader in reinsurance underwriting, at industry meetings and exercises influence, as appropriate, with customers, competitors, retrocessionaires. Serves as a liaison with the medical community and other insurance professionals.
- Reviews contestable claims and waiver of premium claims requests from the claims department.
- Research and analyze medical trends for risk management analysis and guidelines as they impact mortality. Maintains medical expertise as a life insurance medical director by keeping abreast of new developments in the related fields of insurance underwriting and medicine. Participates in medical/underwriting professional associations.
- Keep abreast of latest medical trends and advances. The CMD will be responsible for then disseminating analysis of the impact of these advances on the future of underwriting to key internal stakeholders as well as incorporation into future forward manual guidance and pricing assumptions. Writes articles and contributes information for company medical publication(s).
Qualifications
- MD or DO with a degree from an accredited medical school required
- 5+ Years in life insurance underwriting (case underwriting of life applicants) required
- Experience in setting underwriting standards, evaluating new procedures and new research developments required
- 10+ Years in life insurance underwriting (case underwriting of life applicants) preferred
- Highly advanced knowledge of standard and excess mortality and morbidity as it relates to specific disease states. required
- Highly advanced knowledge of insurance medical practices, trends and research and the ability to apply this knowledge to job and communicate this knowledge to underwriters and management. Highly advanced knowledge of EKG’s and other tests associated with the underwriting process. Highly advanced clinical skills required
- Highly advanced ability to comprehend and interpret insurance and contract documents. required
- Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all stakeholders, including customers and associates. required
- Highly advanced people management skills, demonstrating an ability to lead, mentor and develop associates. Ability to manage associates who are difficult or resistant to leadership. Exceptional ability to work well within team. Exceptional ability to foster a teamwork and customer service focused environment. required
- Basic Word and Excel skills required
- Advanced knowledge of broad business practices required
- Highly advanced persuasion skills when working with internal partners and external customers to resolve issues/problems. Expertise in implementing change, ensuring understanding, participation and ownership. required
- Highly advanced investigative, analytical and problem solving skills utilizing experience, research, guidelines and internal resources. Skilled in data interpretation and advanced analytical capabilities preferred. required
- Exceptional skills in managing multiple tasks, projects and/or sub-teams simultaneously, including the ability to handle changing priorities and ability delegate key areas of responsibility. required
- Reinsurance underwriting preferred
- Multi-lingual preferred
- Licensed to practice medicine in Missouri or a state which reciprocates with Missouri required
- Board certified with American Board of Insurance Medicine preferred

Compensation Range
$255,600.00 - $366,533.00 Annual
Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
