Introduction
The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Office currently has an opening for a Technical Services Engineer! We’re a highly engaged, collaborative team of about 50 employees with an office located at the new Hill Farms State Office Building on Madison’s near west side. The WTCS Office is the administrative service agency of the WTCS Board, which is the coordinating and oversight body for Wisconsin’s 16 public, two-year technical colleges. This position offers the ability to work remotely 80-90% of the time. The employee should expect to report to the office approximately 2-5 times per month or on an as needed basis.

Position Summary
At the Senior level, this position is responsible for managing and administering all aspects of the WTCS workstation lifecycle, including deployment, security, software, and overall health. The role also involves the administration of the WTCS virtual server infrastructure, VMware, firewalls, server hardware and software, backup systems, and networking hardware. The role supports all IT initiatives and proposes new initiatives for approval. Additionally, the position includes updating and maintaining technical documentation and delivering training as needed. This role will evaluate agency needs, suggest new IT initiatives, and ensure the security and smooth operation of all WTCS technology. The position supports the administration and management of federal and state programs administered by the agency through technology.
At the Specialist level, this position will perform similar duties with an overall greater knowledge of general IT concepts, showing the ability to handle more complex requests and work more independently than at the Senior level.

Salary Information
The classification of this position is IS Technical Services – Senior or IS Technical Services – Specialist. The Senior level is in pay schedule/range 07-34, and the Specialist level is in pay schedule/range 07-33. The starting pay for this position at the Senior level will be between $36.00 - $42.00 per hour based on qualifications. The starting pay for this position at the Specialist level will be between $42.00 - $48.00 per hour based on qualifications. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job Details
WTCS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.
A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:
- Experience providing technical support for server infrastructure (hypervisor technology such as VMWare and/or Hyper-V, Windows servers, Linux servers, Microsoft Azure, etc.)
- Experience providing end-user support for software applications (Windows 11, Microsoft 365, Adobe, etc.)
- Experience managing a Microsoft environment using core tools and services (Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy, etc.)
In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:
- Experience managing Windows workstations using imaging, patching and/or automated deployment using tools such as SCCM/MECM, Intune, PDQ or similar enterprise management systems
- Experience providing IT security support (threat hunting, implementing security best practices, managing end point protection, etc.)
- Experience maintaining firewall configurations to ensure network security
