THE TEAM

The TM1 Marketing team develops and maintains applications used to deliver world-class marketing functions to Ticketmaster’s business clients. Our tools are used for marketing events of all sizes from small local venues up to and including the largest venues on the planet, ensuring that our clients can reach their fans with clear and effective marketing.

Our cross-functional team develops and supports these web applications end to end, including the frontend, backend and underlying cloud infrastructure. The team is primarily based in the UK and North America.

THE JOB

In the role of Senior Backend Engineer, you will work remotely for the TM1 Marketing team, based in the UK time zone.  With other team members, you will participate in the design and implementation of application components used for client event marketing. This application is essential to Ticketmaster’s clients’ business, providing solutions for clients to help drive ticket sales and fan engagement.

An experienced backend engineer who is comfortable with Cloud deployments and solution architecture, systems integrations and ideally with integrating with and scaling communications APIs for email, SMS and other marketing channels. You will be responsible for owning the design and development of entire application components. You will have to rely on your wide range of experience to resolve complex issues, and you will have to mentor engineers on your team.

Expertise in backend development is essential to help guide technical decisions and steer the team towards the best solution. While being autonomous with minimal supervision of your team lead, you will rely on your technical knowledge to improve the application iteratively and suggest new solutions while using the best agile practices.

You will represent the team as a technical expert and work closely with the Product Manager on feature requirements and planning.  You will work with a wide array of technologies, be responsible for full end to end implementation of production strength features including both thorough (automated) testing and on-going production support.

• Maintain and modernise legacy code and services

• Automate testing, deployments, performance and recovery
• Ensure high quality through automated tests
• Develop on AWS cloud and Kubernetes
• Interact with Product Owner and UX teams
• Help stakeholders translate ideas into technical solutions
• Inspire other developers by proposing innovative solutions
• Help optimising your development time by choosing the right priorities
• Foster stable relationships with team members
• Develop on a Java / React stack
• Mentor other engineers on your team

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (or TECHNICAL SKILLS/COMPETENCIES)

• Bachelors in computer science or equivalent degree
• Proven years of development experience
• Proven years of experience w/ Agile methodologies

Software

• Proven years of Java development experience and Spring Boot (At least Java 11 ideally with experience of latest LTS version)
• Engineering excellence in relation to backend coding including related tooling for Java (SCA, SonarQube, SpotBugs, PMD etc)
• TDD / BDD and capabilities including creating strategies for testing/verification of big data
• Automated test frameworks including mocked services, environments and deterministic datasets
• Experience testing backends that form part of a large heterogenous systems architecture
• Real production support experience and troubleshooting
• Experience implementing with good security practices (especially around handling PII data) and a secure-by-design mindset

Solution Architecture

• Architecting back-end solutions that operate at scale and account for latency
• Strong understanding of APIs, microservices, and RESTful architecture.
• Proposing pragmatic solutions that minimise/reduce tech debt

Database

• Adept at designing sensible database schemas
• Knowledge of data warehousing solutions
• Experience with SQL and common RDBMS
• Experience with NoSQL is an asset
• Experience with Apache Spark and Databricks is an asset
• Big-Data verification and QA strategies are an asset

Cloud

• Familiarity with AWS or other standard cloud platforms
• Familiarity with OpenSearch & EMR is an asset

DevOps

• Familiarity with Kubernetes, docker
• Observability / monitoring / tracing and experience on production support
• Infrastructure as code / AWS (terraform)
