Job Description

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:

Medical Scientific Liaisons (MSLs) development and supervision on the assigned territory. Provides leadership, guidance and medical scientific expertise to the MSLs and leads the team to maximize company product value through high scientific quality communication with Leading Specialists on a peer-to-peer basis. Accordingly, to strategic lines of Medical Affairs Plan, the MSL is jointly responsible for achieving short-term and long-term company goals at local.

Implements in collaboration with MSLs, Medical Education and Medical Affairs, the Medical Education and Medical Affairs plan in the territory.

Link between CVT and field team.

Main Activities/Tasks

Line Management

  • Coaching of MSLs in the field to develop their skills in the medical scientific discussions
  • Coaching outside the territory to help the MSLs in their planning, generation of annual plans, tackle difficult or different projects and conflict management, among other matters.
  • Approvals, monitoring and reviewing the activities organized by the MSLs in their work area and having an oversight of every activity on the area by approving “Plan de Área Terapéutica (PAT)”.
  • Periodic evaluation of his/her team members and setting goals and improvement /corrective plans.
  • Identify training needs of team members and provide solutions. Guarantee a good coordination between the MSL team members, sharing best practices and working as a virtual team
  • Management of the Medical Education budget for its area of responsibility, and team members
  • Implement metrics and reporting of MSL activity in iCONNECT in agreement with the product strategy. Metrics can also include Scientific Alignment Score (SAS) or any other mean of measuring the relevance of the information delivered to Leading Specialists (i.e. JO.E. Medical, Insights...).
  • Conduct regular informal Career Conversations to with all direct reports to ascertain their career and development aspirations in line with Janssen Talent approach at a frequency agreed between manager and line report/s
  • Set clear performance standards, provide feedback and coaching, and hold direct reports accountable for key deliverables
  • Conduct annual performance reviews with direct reports to help support the creation of a diverse, high performing team
  • Seek input on performance of direct reports in activities on other teams and committees, and measure and reward staff based on contribution to Global, EMEA and Country functional activities
  • Be accountable for the development of succession plans for their Area
  • Ensure MSL involvement in patients´ access to Janssen products, providing relevant, accurate and high-level scientific information through medical request from different stakeholders as pharmacists, hospitals’ managers and/or clinicians.
  • Ensure MSL involvement and proper contribution in company sponsored clinical studies.

Customer/External Interaction

  • Development and maintenance of a contact network with Leading Specialists

Strategy Development

  • Develop MSL Country Activity Plan which is aligned with the Medical Affairs Component of the relevant Brand Plans and approved by the Medical Affairs Director, propose MSL materials for to be used following HCPs needs and requests.
  • Review and approve each MSL’s list of Leading Specialists
  • Supervise the implementation of the Medical Education Plan and Medical Affairs study execution, in the territory, in collaboration with Medical Education and Medical Affairs
  • As a member of the CVT, MSL manager has to contribute and guarantee the flow of information between the field and the headquarters, through qualitative and quantitative analysis of KPIs and Medical Insights collected by MSLs. These analysis will have a clear impact on the CVT strategy.

Internal collaboration

  • Part of the MSL Managers network
  • Strong coordination with other internal stakeholders in the field (National sales manager, Regional Manager, KAM, etc…)
  • Meet regularly with therapeutic area medical lead to co-ordinate & support medical affairs & medical education projects as appropriate.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance of HCBI and the code of conduct by all team members
  • Embed Credo, SAFE Fleet, and all Company values in the team
  • Ensure the full understanding and compliance for the MSL Team Members of the specific procedures applying to MSL role (MSL Guideline, SOP for MedEd Activities, SOP for Grants and IIS, local regulations, etc)
  • Report all suspected adverse reactions, serious or non serious, I may be aware of within a maximum of 24 hours after being aware of it and communicate it to the Pharmacovigilance Department.

Additionally, for all employees involved in Research Related Activities (RRA):

  • Ensure safety reporting requirements (timely AE/PQC reporting) as set out in company policies and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) are met and appropriately managed when planning projects, developing materials, executing projects and contracting vendors.
  • Ensure HCC and legal requirements (Fair Market Value, Transfer of Value rules, Promotional Materials rules) are fully understood, appropriately managed and complied with when planning projects, developing materials, executing projects and contracting vendors.
  • Ensure inspection readiness with respect to personal training compliance, and availability of recent CV and individualized Job Description.

Therapeutic area knowledge

  • To keep abreast of medical and scientific knowledge. Proactively support the continuous scientific update of the MSL team, identifying the training needs and coordinating with MAF in order to look for the best training formulas.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of therapy knowledge and competitor activity to coach/mentor the team by attending courses and industry meetings, reading scientific publications and discussing therapy area with colleagues to keep up to date with developments within the pharmaceutical industry and pharmaceutical medicine.

Essential Knowledge & Skills

  • University Degree on science or related areas
  • Previous field position will be highly valuated, especially MSL position
  • Innovative with the ability to coordinate and drive a complex and changing environment
  • Highly customer focused with an awareness and understanding of the importance of Company results.
  • Scientific knowledge preferably in the Therapeutic Area
  • High level of English
