The primary purpose of the Windows Desktop and Office 365 Engineering role is to design, build, deploy, and maintain secure, optimized, and standardized Windows desktop environments and Office 365 client applications across the organization.
This role ensures that end users have reliable, efficient, and secure access to desktop computing resources and Office 365 tools, supporting business productivity and compliance with corporate IT policies. Additionally, the engineer will troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, implement security hardening measures, and drive continuous improvement in the desktop and Office 365 environments.
This combined with a large project pipeline, will allow someone with the right skills to have exposure to both BAU and project work. The environment is fast paced and allows huge exposure to the latest technologies, coupled with the ability to be involved with the planning, design and commissioning, of new and existing requirements.
This is a role where knowledge is openly shared and solutions are driven as a team. Open communication is a key and the candidate should excel at communication skills and have great attention to detail.
Within the role you will provide 3rd line support, infrastructure delivery, BAU and project based work across the enterprise. You will support IT incidents, effectively managing technical and business based communication and ensuring that route cause analysis and effective resolution is delivered. You will enable infrastructure strategy to be realised via information and knowledge sharing with other infrastructure team members as well as architects.
Key Responsibilities:
Windows Desktop Engineering:
Design, build, and maintain standardized Windows desktop images using tools like Ivanti Endpoint Manager, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), or Intune.
Implement and manage group policies (GPOs) to enforce security and configuration standards.
Automate repetitive tasks and processes using scripting languages such as PowerShell.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to Windows desktop performance, security, and functionality.
Work closely with the security team to ensure that desktops comply with corporate security policies and best practices.
Experience of capacity and performance analytics which can be drawn from when making customer recommendations in order to ensure solutions are efficient and optimally scaled.
Office 365 Engineering:
Design, deploy, and manage Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) on Windows desktop environments.
Standardize the installation and configuration of Office 365 clients across the organization, ensuring consistency and compliance with corporate standards.
Implement security hardening measures for Office 365 clients, including configuring security settings, applying the latest updates, and ensuring adherence to best practices.
Optimize the performance and functionality of Office 365 applications on desktops by fine-tuning configurations, managing add-ins, and troubleshooting compatibility issues.
Automate the deployment and update process for Office 365 clients using tools like Ivanti Endpoint Manager, Microsoft Intune, or similar solutions.
Ensure compliance with data protection and security policies by configuring features such as data loss prevention (DLP), email encryption, and secure authentication methods.
Provide advanced support for Office 365 client-related issues, working closely with end users to resolve problems quickly and effectively.
Collaborate with other IT teams to integrate Office 365 clients seamlessly with other desktop applications and services.
Gathers performance statistics from the IT platforms to enable recommendations for optimisation / service improvements.
Support and Maintenance:
Provide 3rd-level support for escalated issues related to Windows desktop environments and Office 365.
Monitor system performance and availability, proactively identifying and addressing potential issues.
Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Collaborate with other IT teams to ensure seamless integration and operation of end-user computing environments.
Provides specialist guidance and some supervision to less experienced colleagues. Analyses work in progress, takes action to ensure targets are met within safety and quality procedures, including hand-over to client where appropriate.
Identify Service Improvements and package these up into a proposal detailing the problem, the impact, the proposed solution and associated effort to implement.
Responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with internal customers and vendors and able to thrive in the ever changing work environment
Initiates action to maintain or improve services and standards within area of authority, recognising issues that need to be escalated.
Prepares and maintains operational documentation for relevant systems / services. Advises systems development and service delivery staff on the correct and effective use of system software.
Project Management:
Lead and participate in IT infrastructure projects, particularly those focused on end-user computing and Office 365.
Work with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, plan, and execute projects on time and within budget.
Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies related to Windows desktops and Office 365, recommending and implementing improvements as appropriate.
Produce detailed design documentation on medium to large scale for End User Service solutions, considering infrastructure and environmental factors.
Ensure project involvement is aligned to the Project Life Cycle Management, adhering to the four phases, conception, planning, execution and termination.
Skills and Experience:
Education:
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in Windows desktop engineering and support.
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience with Office 365 administration and deployment.
Technical Skills:
Proficient in Windows 10/11 operating systems and Office 365 services.
Experience with deployment and management tools like Ivanti Endpoint Manager, SCCM, MDT, Intune, or equivalent.
Strong scripting skills using PowerShell.
Knowledge of Active Directory, group policies, DNS, DHCP, and other related technologies.
Familiarity with Office 365 security features, compliance requirements, and best practices.
Certifications:
Relevant Microsoft certifications (e.g., MS-100, MS-101, MD-100, MD-101) are highly desirable.
Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
