Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will be responsible for shaping Classroom Champions’ financial sustainability, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making. This role goes beyond managing finances, it requires a strategic leader who will proactively design and implement the infrastructure, processes, and systems needed to support Classroom Champion’s substantial growth over the next five to ten years.
As a core member of the executive team, the CFO will drive financial reporting and planning, operational improvements, and organizational strategy to strengthen Classroom Champions’ impact across North America. Given that Classroom Champions is a fully remote nonprofit operating in Canada and the U.S., this role requires strong leadership in virtual operations, technology, and compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
What You’ll Do
Financial Strategy & Management
- Develop and implement a long-term financial strategy that aligns with Classroom Champions’ mission, growth and impact objectives.
- Oversee financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance across the U.S. & Canada.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and cost allocations to drive efficiency and effectiveness.
- Oversee cash flow management, investment strategies, financial reporting, tax compliance, audits, and financial risk assessments to ensure adherence to regulations, best practices across both countries.
- Collaborate with external accounting firms or hire and manage an internal accounting team.
- Manage annual audits and financial reporting to the Board of Directors and funders, ensuring accuracy and integrity in financial reporting.
Operational Leadership
- Act as the executive sponsor for HR, IT, and operational systems, ensuring Classroom Champions has the tools, processes, and policies to operate effectively as a fully remote, cross-border team.
- Oversee technology strategy, including financial systems, CRM integration, and data/reporting infrastructure.
- Lead risk management, overseeing insurance, contracts, and compliance policies.
- Champion operational excellence, driving process improvement and automation across finance, HR, and IT
- Build and maintain strong relationships with external partners, vendors, and stakeholders
Data & Performance-Driven Decision Making
- Build a data-driven culture, using analytics and dashboards to enhance financial and operational decision-making.
- Develop and refine financial models to evaluate new initiatives, growth strategies, and funding opportunities.
- Leverage data to assess and improve program cost-effectiveness, operational efficiencies, and fundraising efforts.
Qualifications and Experience
- 10+ years of progressive experience in financial and operational leadership, including at least 5 years in a senior management role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience demonstrating deep financial expertise. CPA, CFA, or similar designation preferred, but not required.Proven ability to lead financial reporting, planning, strategy and compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Experience managing financial systems, audits, risk management, and tax and legal compliance in a nonprofit or complex organizational setting.
- Strong analytical mindset, with the ability to use data to drive strategy and decision-making.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with senior management and teams in a remote work environment.
- Demonstrated success in building operational systems, HR structures, and technology solutions in a remote or multi-site organization.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams, fostering a high-performance and mission-driven culture.
- Experience in managing change and scaling organizations, ensuring processes support long-term sustainability.
