Position Summary

The coordinator for volunteer and visitor-use management is a technical role, nested within the Strategic Operations and Supports team. Reporting to the Director, Land Management, the coordinator advises on program development, design, implementation and reporting, supporting regional teams and other business units with respect to visitation and volunteer programming. The coordinator plays an important role in ensuring NCC successfully connects Canadians with nature. 

This role bridges the strategic and tactical world, contributing significantly to the implementation of the Visitor Use Management Framework (VUMF) by creating various tools and processes to support Regions in their work. Similarly, the coordinator will enhance on the ground volunteerism, through the management of the NCC Conservation Volunteer program, providing expertise in data management, best practices, internal and external communications and general program coordination and reporting.

This role involves being a tactical subject matter expert in volunteerism and visitor-use management. This includes visitor-use planning, visitor safety and compliance, social science data collection, recreational activities and visitor services, signage & interpretation, volunteer partnership agreements and PPSG’s related to NCC volunteer management.

Position Requirements

  • Education Required/Preferred: Post-secondary Degree relevant to NCC’s conservation mandate (ecology, conservation, biology, etc.) and/or in outdoor recreation, tourism, social science, or a related field.
  • Experience Required/Preferred: At least 5 years of experience in coordinating human use (volunteerism, recreation, research, farming, indigenous rights, etc.) on land that is protected for its ecological values (public or private).

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of NCC’s strategic direction, structure, and governance.
  • Knowledge of the current and emerging trends in outdoor recreation and volunteerism.
  • Knowledge of sustainable practices in the context of outdoor recreation.
  • General knowledge of natural sciences and conservation practices.

Abilities

  • Ability to analyze issues / challenge / opportunity, to identify options, and to make recommendations,
  • Ability to analyze social science data and to recommend appropriate actions,
  • Ability to lead peer groups, to consult with them, and to organize and facilitate workshops / meetings,
  • Ability to research information, to adapt and synthesize it, and to contribute to the development of guidelines and policies,
  • Ability to coordinate program activities with various stakeholders (internal and external) in a complex environment (organization-wide in scope),
  • The ability to communicate in a second official language is an asset.
