Position Overview:

In a complex healthcare environment, managing risk effectively is critical to patient safety, financial stability, regulatory compliance, governance, and overall organizational success. It is necessary to drive coordination, standardization, and efficiency across risk functions.

This position will serve as a senior leader of the Legal and Risk Services Department reporting directly to the General Counsel, working across the entire system and with senior leaders. Responsible at the enterprise level to shape, advance and deliver legal services with respect to all strategic enterprise risk management. This leader will help establish and oversee the Risk Operational Core Team (ROCT)—a centralized workgroup dedicated to integrating and aligning key risk functions across the system. This leader will develop a best-in-class risk program by fostering collaboration, optimizing processes, and enhancing enterprise-wide risk management strategies. Enterprise risk activities will be conducted under attorney client privilege and attorney work product. Additionally, as appropriate, matters will be subject to patient safety work product privilege. This position is responsible for unifying risk-related activities across the organization to ensure a coordinated, proactive, and strategic approach to risk management. This includes aligning risk functions across the enterprise to create a consistent and structured risk management framework and integrated risk data & insights to support informed decision-making, and enhancing operational effectiveness by streamlining processes, reducing redundancies, and optimizing risk management workflows.

Job Description:

Education/Licensure: 

  • Doctorate: Juris Doctorate – Law required 

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school 

  • Licensed to practice law and a member in good standing of a state bar association 

 

Experience: 

  • 20 years of legal experience at a law firm or in-house position managing enterprise risk and implementing interdisciplinary programs. 

  • Experience overseeing an in-house program/lane in a complex healthcare organization with responsibilities to deliver comprehensive enterprise risk advice. 

  • Experience reporting directly to the general counsel, interacting with the Board of Directors, interacting with C-suite leadership. 

  • Excellent judgment and proven experience analyzing strategic opportunities, risks and making risk determinations. 

  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a complex and matrixed corporate environment. 

 

Knowledge: 

  • Extensive knowledge of healthcare, including laws, operating models, financial structures, litigation, risk management, compliance, insurance, and other relevant disciplines. 

  • Knowledge of nonprofit regulations. 

  • Strong business acumen with healthcare experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate legal complexities into lay terms readily understood by Directors, senior management, and line personnel. 

  • Superior negotiating and critical thinking skills.

Pay Range is $204.33 to $276.44 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
