Summary
With VP of Marketing & Communication sponsorship, the Director Corporate Communications leads our stakeholder communications for internal and external communications and public relations. Stakeholders include Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), physician partners, corporate leadership, and colleagues. The Director Corporate Communications is responsible for bringing a strategic approach to internal alignment, awareness of our priorities and strategic initiatives, driving external awareness, and increasing positive publicity for the AMSURG brand (including public relations and reputation management). The role requires strong relationship-building and influencing skills and the ability to develop meaningful relationships the C-Suite and nationally based, key external stakeholders.
Work Schedule
This role is offered on a fully remote basis allowing the Director of Communications to be based anywhere in the country. Periodic travel of about 20% is anticipated to engage with ASCs, attend industry events, and participate in field marketing initiatives and quarterly/annual planning meetings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Internal Communications Forums: Aligns with AMSURG senior leadership on priority communications for the organization’s corporate and ASC stakeholders. Establishes and leads the appropriate forums of communication with the appropriate frequency (e.g., annual leadership offsite, quarterly town halls, written communications/ updates, monthly functional leadership meetings, etc.).
- Internal Engagement and Awareness: Maintains a pulse on organizational engagement and delivers communications and events that foster a cohesive and aligned AMSURG workforce towards key strategic priorities (e.g., videography/ storytelling of key senior leaders, internal promotion of critical events like Colon Cancer Awareness, etc.).
- Overarching Strategy: Partners with external public relation firms and co-leads external communication planning, development, and execution to ensure success of major initiatives which support the organization’s mission, vision, strategic direction, and annual goals. Grows AMSURG external presence in the market in alignment with partners from marketing and with leaders of service lines and corporate functions. Develops external communication collateral. Keeps leadership informed on key issues affecting the organization and prepares resources to communicate about issues internally.
- Public/Media Relations: Builds PR/media outreach strategy leveraging relationship-building with key media and influencers. Together with marketing, partners on potential opportunities for earned media coverage. Is the main spokesperson for the organization, when appropriate.
- Social Media: Sets social media strategy and leads social media team that implements strategy, defines content, and conducts social media monitoring and response efforts (both for corporate sites and for ASC sites).
- Assess and Respond: Establishes tools and processes to monitor media coverage regarding the company and its brands, disseminating to key stakeholders as appropriate and alerting leadership of potential concerns or other opportunities to address through communication.
- Crisis Communications: Responsible for the development and evolution of AMSURG Crisis Communications plan. During any identified crisis, serves as the lead media contact for the organization; provides consultation and support resources to the broader crisis response team on key communication/media issues.
- Stakeholder Relations: Supports executive team through strategic communication guidance for issues and reputation management, including but not limited to labor relations and corporate campaigns, and merger and affiliations. Forges and maintains highly collaborative relationships with key internal executives and stakeholders to ensure strategies and messages are aligned and coordinated.
- Vendor Relations: Responsible for all relationships and budgeting with external/PR vendors. Leads selection and assessment processes, as well as internal budgeting.
- Content Management: Leads the planning and production of external communication to key audiences (i.e., media, community and business leaders, and health care consumers) to build trust and promote awareness of the organization and its clinicians and subsidiaries. Develops model of content development, editing and delivery that is effective and efficient.
- Brand Communications: Develops externally facing company and/or brand collateral, aligned with internal branding and marketing, in support of key publicity initiatives.
- People Management: Leads internal communications team and co-leads external communications/PR firm efforts to grow ASMURG communications competencies. e.g., internal communications forums content and process; proactive pitch development; press release development; media research; media relationship management and reputation management.

Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required, ideally in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 8+ years of relevant experience in Corporate Communications, Public Relations, and/or related fields.
- 2+ years in a people leadership role.
- Experience in the national healthcare industry.
- Proficient in social / new media channels.
- Experience in public relations, media relations, social media monitoring and response, and crisis/reputation preferred.
Physical Demands
- Engage in various physical activities occasionally, such as standing, walking, and prolonged sitting.
- Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
- Execute tasks that involve reaching, climbing, balancing, and adopting postures like stooping and kneeling.
- Occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds and repetitive upper body motion, especially for computer use.
- Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and focus adjustment.
Work Environment

- Quiet to moderate noise levels, conducive to both focused work and creative brainstorming sessions are required.
