What you will be doing in the role of a Manager, Applied Research & Evaluation
The Manager, Applied Research & Evaluation, is a member of the Applied Research & Evaluation (ARE) team within Komen’s Mission division. The ARE team supports Komen’s role as an evidence-based organization by transforming data into meaningful intelligence that will guide program strategy, convey Komen’s impact, and contribute to the body of scientific evidence about breast cancer.
What you will bring to the table
- Provide oversight and implementation of all phases of patient insight research studies
- Develops, leads, and conducts qualitative and mixed methods research studies to assess patient insights, including determining research methodology and implementation, sampling, instrument development, validation, data collection, analysis, benchmarking, and reporting.
- Oversee and coordinates patient engagement and recruitment for the collection of data from the breast cancer community including patients, survivors, those living with metastatic breast cancer, researchers, co-survivors and others, and subsets of the community such as those in specific racial/ethnic groups, socio-economic statuses, etc.
- Develops research protocols and consent forms and manages protocols through the regulatory review process.
- Provides oversight and conducts qualitative and mixed methods research through surveys, focus groups and in-depth interviews.
- Oversee and perform analysis of data from a grounded theoretical perspective, including coding, code book refinement, consolidation of themes and data clean-up.
- Serves as a subject matter expert in community engagement and qualitative and mixed methods research to provide guidance and thought leadership to program teams, partners, and internal/external stakeholders.
- Assesses data from literature, research, and evaluation studies to make evidence-based recommendations and identify opportunities for Komen-led qualitative and mixed methods research studies.
- Identifies how findings of studies confirm or expand the current understanding of breast cancer.
- Identifies, develops, and implements culturally responsive, innovative approaches to community health program evaluation and impact assessment that is commensurate with the values underlying equity work, including the development of standard evaluation tools (logic models, program plans, measurable objectives, benchmarks, etc.).
- Works across functional teams to optimize data collection procedures and provide subject matter expertise for solutions to improve data system efficiencies.
- Demonstrates continuous learning relating to breast cancer care and outcomes, community health and health equity, and evaluation.
- Develop and implements strategies to communicate the outcomes and impact of Susan G. Komen's programs for multiple audiences.
- Shares results and recommendations from evaluation and patient insight studies in an easily digestible manner in both written and presentation format for a variety of audiences
- Performs technical writing and reporting of data, including complex reports that provide statistics, demographics, ratings, averages, and other numerical and text-based data.
- Oversee and contribute to the communication of study outcomes including the development and updating of talking points, website content, program summaries, abstracts for presentation at scientific conferences, and scholarly manuscripts for high-impact academic medical and social scientific journals.
- Presents study results for donors and Mission leadership.
- Research and prepares responses to data requests for information on Komen’s Center for Applied Research.
- Works collaboratively across Komen departments to help secure mission program funding and ensure donor stewardship.
- Represents Komen and the mission team in a professional manner internally and externally to prospective and current donors and other key stakeholders.
- Serves as a Komen representative on internal committees and working groups.
- Responds to data request inquiries for information on evaluation and patient insight studies.
- Contributes to proposals, pitch documents, presentations, and other materials to assist in revenue-generating activities and support for mission programs.
- Upholds Komen's principles of scientific excellence, fairness, and transparency.
- Provides project management.
- Maintains proper research data maintenance and security protocols.
- Manage documentation for Komen’s qualitative and mixed methods research evaluation portfolio (e.g., IRB submission, consent documentation, participant communication, etc.)
- Ensures research and evaluation project timelines are properly prioritized and followed across multiple projects.
- Works effectively with cross-functional teams to accomplish goals and initiatives.
- Develops and maintains process documentation for the Center for Applied Research (SOWs, SOPs, guidelines, etc.)
- All other duties as assigned.
We know you will have and be able to
- Master’s degree in public health, Applied Research or Social Sciences required.
- 5-7 years post master’s degree, in mixed methods evaluation, community-based participatory research, data collection techniques, and data analysis.
- Demonstrated experience with community engagement and recruitment of diverse communities.
- Substantive experience with survey design and in-depth interviewing and conducting of focus groups.
- Understanding of best practices in the ethical conduct of mixed methods and human subject research.
- Ability to see projects through from conception to completion; demonstrated ability to identify problems and follow through until resolution.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and collaborate with team members.
- Strong communication skills, written and oral.
- Ability to work independently and autonomously but also function well in a collaborative team setting, working across functions and different types of people.
- Demonstrated expertise in managing working relationships in a matrix structure.
- Demonstrated experience in client and stakeholder communication including but not limited to written, oral and electronic reports.
- Travel – up to 10%.
We would love it if you also have
- Ph.D. in public health, social sciences, or related field.
- Experience working in a non-profit setting.
- Experience working with patients/survivors of disease.
- Breast cancer knowledge and/or experience in breast cancer
- Experience performing quantitative analysis using statistical software packages, such as SPSS, Stata, or SAS.
- Experience using qualitative data management/analysis software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti, etc.
- Experience using survey software such as Qualtrics.
- Intermediate level of computer/technical skills. Programs utilized are Microsoft Office, databases (internal and external) and virtual networking programs (Teams, RingCentral). Must be able to assist others with basic computer/technical issues and/or understanding.
- Advanced data visualization and communication/presentation skills. Programs utilized are Canva, InDesign, etc.

- Approximate salary of $56,000 to $75,000; exact compensation ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate's skills, experience and geographic location.
