The Director of Benefits will lead the strategic design, management, and administration of our comprehensive benefits programs. This role will drive the evolution of our benefits offerings, ensuring they remain competitive, cost-effective, and aligned with employee needs and company objectives.

As a hands-on leader, the Director will oversee benefits strategy, vendor management, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have a proactive, forward-thinking mindset, leveraging industry trends, data analytics, and employee feedback to enhance our benefits programs.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Strategic Leadership & Program Design
    • Develop and execute a long-term benefits strategy that supports employee well-being, enhances engagement, and strengthens talent retention.
    • Conduct market benchmarking and analysis to ensure competitive, innovative, and cost-effective benefits offerings.
    • Partner with senior HR and business leaders to assess workforce needs and tailor benefits solutions accordingly.
    • Lead the implementation of new benefits initiatives, such as wellness programs, financial wellness education, and flexible benefits options.
    • Collaborate with Finance on budgeting, forecasting, and cost analysis of benefits programs.
  • Operational Oversight & Hands-On Leadership
    • Manage and mentor a Benefits Specialist, providing guidance on daily benefits administration, compliance, and employee support.
    • Serve as an escalation point for complex benefits issues that require advanced problem-solving or vendor intervention.
    • Oversee open enrollment planning and execution, ensuring clear communication, smooth implementation, and high employee engagement.
    • Work closely with HRIS and IT teams to optimize systems for benefits enrollment, tracking, and reporting.
  • Vendor & Compliance Management
    • Lead vendor selection, contract negotiations, and ongoing performance management for benefits providers.
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, FMLA, COBRA, and state-specific mandates.
    • Prepare and oversee regulatory filings such as Form 5500, ACA reporting, and audits.
    • Develop and enforce benefits policies and documentation to ensure consistency and legal compliance.
  • Employee Communication & Engagement
    • Develop and implement a strategic communication plan to enhance employee understanding and engagement with benefits programs.
    • Design and lead benefits education initiatives, including workshops, webinars, and digital resources.
    • Gather employee feedback through surveys and focus groups to continuously refine benefits offerings and improve satisfaction.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. Relevant certifications (e.g., SHRM-CP, SPHR, CEBS) are a plus.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in benefits strategy, administration, and compliance.
  • 3+ years in a leadership role with direct management responsibilities.
  • Experience in multi-state or global benefits administration, preferably in the biotechnology or life sciences sector.
  • Strategic, analytical, and data-driven approach to benefits management.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with experience developing and guiding a team.
  • Expertise in compliance requirements and risk mitigation related to employee benefits.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to handle sensitive employee matters with discretion.
  • Proficiency in HRIS and benefits platforms.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
