Reporting to the Senior Manager, Safety, Health and Environment, Retail, Canada, this position is responsible for directly supporting our current Safety, Health, and Environmental (SH&E) Team, and indirectly supporting our employees at retail branches across Canada, in particular those branches assigned to you.
What you will do:
- Regulatory Responsibilities
- Identify Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), Canada Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), National Safety Code (NSC), Commercial Driver and Vehicle regulations applicable to materials and processes at branches and assist in interpreting SH&E, OH&S, CEPA, NSC regulations, standards, and programs.
- Manage the SHE Retail Canada SHE Management System by maintaining and updating Nutrien Ag Solutions Canada standards to meet regulatory requirements.
- Manage and update Learning Management System (LMS) modules to align with regulatory requirement and existing standards.
- Collaboratively develop company SH&E triannual audits and life critical assessments.
- Keep apprised of federal, provincial, regional laws and other related regulations affecting branches in the Canadian Region.
- Maintain good working relationships with regulatory agencies.
- Work with the Senior Manager SHE Retail Canada on advanced SH&E strategic planning.
- Safety
- Investigate incidents such as injuries, vehicle collisions and property damage as requested.
- Determine root causes of incidents and collaboratively oversee preparations of corrective action plans for each incident as requested.
- Ensure timely notifications are made to regulatory agencies and company management for each incident as requested.
- Support branch and division management on construction projects.
- Coach branches to help eliminate unsafe work practices, monitoring unsafe work conditions, and proactively supporting hazard identification and near miss reporting at assigned branches.
- Environmental Engagement
- Respond and help to coordinate spill response efforts.
- Work with our Environmental Team to help them evaluate environmental risk on operational practices at assigned branches.
- Assist with the evaluation of proposed acquisitions and divestitures for safety and environmental risk as requested.
- Assist assigned branches on waste minimization and management issues.
What you will bring:
- High school diploma desired.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, environmental science, or related field encouraged.
- Professional certification (in safety or environmental field) preferred; any applicant hired will be encouraged to obtain a recognized certification in Safety.
- A working knowledge of applicable federal and provincial laws and regulations including (but not limited) to OH&S, CEPA, Agrichemical Warehousing Standards Association (AWSA), Ammonia Code of Practice (ACOP), and National Safety Code.
- Must be self-motivated and disciplined, requiring little to no direct supervision, ability to concurrently deal with multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
- Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to travel up to 65% of the time, with overnight travel approximately 40% of the time.
- Ability to work outdoors in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability to be certified by a physician to wear a respirator and be able to wear other personal protective equipment.
- Ability to operate in a drug-free workplace and possess a valid Canadian driver’s license.
