Description

Pharmacists Mutual Insurance has an opening for an Underwriting Portfolio Specialist. This role leads projects that analyze the way the enterprise manages its portfolio risk and overall risk. This role serves the enterprise as a resource for portfolio data analysis, management of the team's portfolio of vendors, and workflow efficiency analysis. This role facilitates effective relationships with third-party vendors to ensure fair work per the contract. They may be called upon to perform duties that include analysis of human and automated underwriting functions, vendor expense management, and process mapping.

Underwriting Portfolio Specialist

  • Requires oversight from manager.
  • Analyzes the underwriting portfolio, identifies red flags, and discusses findings with leadership.
  • Analyzes workflows across the department to maximize ease of doing business.
  • Facilitates risk management vendor request process from underwriters and submits results back to underwriters.

Essential Functions

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:    

  • Analyzes the underwriting portfolio for trends by line of business, vertical, and more granular data fields. This may include front-end and back-end analysis of automated underwriting function for continuous improvement.
  • Is responsible for the overall management of Underwriting & Risk Management vendor relationships, functions, and expenses. Must maintain expenses at or below budget.
  • Assists AVP of Underwriting Operations in analyzing workflows across the department to ensure maximum streamlining for ease of doing business for agents and customers. This may include process mapping.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with department's vendors and communicates effectively with vendors and internally throughout the life cycle of the contract.
  • Documents department's vendor procedures and processes to facilitate consistency and efficiency of how work is performed by third parties.
  • Reviews questionnaires as required for internal desk review of accounts.
  • Serves as the internal lead for maintaining risk management customer resources. Works with Marketing's Content Creator to identify and publish new content.
  • Stays abreast of current events and works with Marketing to alert members when a significant or catastrophic event is imminent.
  • Works cooperatively and builds strong working relationships with leadership and peers to share and gather information necessary to complete work.
  • Participates in training classes and department and company meetings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to build and analyze portfolio data in a way that is effective for leadership to understand in order to make changes nimbly and as necessary.
  • Understands the commercial insurance business process and the fundamental roles that underwriting, operations functions, and risk management play in that process.
  • Understands where portfolio metrics need to be in order to meet all goals and objectives, and is able to flag metrics that do not meet those goals and objectives.
  • Understands company systems, including underwriting systems, at a level that is needed to perform job effectively.
  • Ability to summarize third-party vendor usage and expense snapshot across department on a regular cadence, identifying positive and concerning trends.
  • Ability to identify how each third-party vendor adds appropriate value for the expense.
  • Ability to review all risk management vendor options and, with leadership, outline which options are ideal for which sizes and types of insureds.
  • Understands department budget for third-party vendor expenses and is able to identify how to remain on track.
  • Ability to visually and effectively display workflows and processes using Microsoft Visio or a similar tool.
  • Maintains technical proficiency through continuing education, maintenance of technical designation(s) and independent work.
  • Ability to conduct independent research using internet browser.
  • Use inductive and deductive reasoning skills to interpret information.
  • Ability to use initiative and apply innovative thinking.
  • Ability to provide quality member service.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment through written and oral communication.

Qualifications

Experience and Education Qualifications

Underwriting Portfolio Specialist

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 years of related experience; or
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent and 5 years of related experience; or
  • Bachelor's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or
  • Master's Degree

Work Environment

  • Primary work environment is in a climate-controlled office setting
  • Work may involve travel to attend meetings at other locations
