Job description

A bit about the role
Salary: £7,000 on publication of the Almanack.
Contract Type: Freelance (initially 1 year with scope to extend), part-time.
Location: Remote.
Hours: Busy periods (Jan-March) may require an average of 20 hours per week. Outside of this, the time commitment is much reduced.

The British Rowing Almanack provides a comprehensive record of the results of affiliated and some other rowing competitions in Great Britain and of the GB Rowing Team, as well as the British Rowing Yearbook.

All clubs affiliated to British Rowing receive a complimentary copy of the Almanack, which is also available for sale.

Its current volunteer Editor, Maggie Phillips, will be retiring after the 2025 edition is published in late March 2025 after 15 years in the role. She is, however, keen to remain as a volunteer helper to support the new editor, particularly for their first edition. From the 2025 edition, the Almanack Team also includes a volunteer Assistant Editor.

The Editor works closely with an in-house co-ordinator at British Rowing, who is responsible for the British Rowing Yearbook section, much of which is sourced from other departments within British Rowing, in particular, the Competition and Club results from BROE as well as other key sections such as the calendars and annual reports. The in-house co-ordinator also sources most photos, sells the advertising, and manages and edits the obituaries.

Layout and printing has been done by Johnsons Printers in Cheshire for many years but layout will now be integrated into the Editor’s role.

Responsibilities

The Almanack Editor is responsible for producing - in collaboration with British Rowing staff members - the annual British Rowing Almanack on schedule and to a high standard of accuracy and comprehensiveness. This will involve:

  • Commissioning, collating and editing results and reports from a variety of sources including individuals at other Associations and the World Rowing website.
  • Writing reports, photo captions and other material.
  • Photo selection and basic editing.
  • Proof reading.
  • Layout (to be discussed).
