INTRO TO POSITION
The Benefits Specialist will support the Total Rewards team in administering employee benefits and wellness programs based on NPR’s business strategies and operating objectives. Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing benefits packages, explaining benefits to employees, and liaising with service providers. Our ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of various types of employee benefits and the laws and regulations related to them.
You should also be able to contribute to our People Team in developing competitive benefits packages to attract and retain talent.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond to employee inquiries regarding NPR and NPM benefit programs.
- Assists employees with claims resolution by liaising between employees and our insurance carriers.
- Conducts Benefits Onboarding for all new hires and transferring employees.
- Process new hire benefits enrollment and employee benefits changes.
- Responsible for coordinating Annual Health Fair/Flu shots.
- Administers NPR Wellness Programs in partnership with NPR Wellness Clinic and NPR Fitness Center.
- Assists with Open Enrollment preparation.
- Primary point of contact for day-to-day activities related to the retirement plans.
- Initiate initial notices and exit information to COBRA carrier.
- Manages benefits eligibility for temporary employees.
- Maintains Affordable Care Act measurement groups and eligibility notices.
- Assist with the Leave Administration and the FMLA process.
- Responsibility for Benefits invoices and reconciliation.
- Ensures compliance with data privacy and protection guidelines.
- Maintains the benefits intranet site and the shared drive and employee files.
- Assists in the preparation of benefits communications.
- Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 years experience working in employee benefits
- Proven experience as a Benefits Specialist or similar role
- Knowledge of various types of insurance plans, retirement plans and laws related to employee benefits
- Proficient in MS Office; knowledge of HRIS; UKG Preferred
- Outstanding organizational and multitasking abilities
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
- Keen attention to detail
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
WORK LOCATION
- Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. It is based out of our Washington, DC office, but the employee may choose to work from a location that NPR approves.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Working knowledge of federal and state regulations such as ERISA, FMLA, ADA, COBRA, PPACA, HIPAA, and Health and Welfare plans.
- Extensive HRIS systems and MS Office knowledge, including strong EXCEL skills.
- Ability to create solutions to solve complex problems and influence customers.
- Strong analytical skills and spreadsheet knowledge.
- Basic HR and benefit fundamentals knowledge, including design principles and administration.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience collaborating with employees across a diverse organization.
- Outstanding verbal and written presentation skills.
- Communicates effectively to convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.
- Instills trust by gaining the confidence of others through honesty, integrity and authenticity.
- Collaborates and builds partnerships with others to meet shared objectives.
JOB TYPE
- This is a full-time, exempt position.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range: The anticipated salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $76,000 - $85,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires across all US locations.
Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR’s benefits options. Benefits include access to health and wellness, paid time off, and financial well-being. Plan options include medical, dental, vision, life/ accidental death and dismemberment, long-term disability, short-term disability, and voluntary retirement savings to all eligible NPR employees.
