ABOUT THE ROLE

Role Summary:

At Sortly, we are known for our commitment to simplicity and user-friendliness in everything we build. We are currently looking for Data Engineers who share our dedication to creating exceptional, data-driven experiences that empower teams across the company—from revenue operations to marketing—to make well-informed, strategic decisions. You will be responsible for designing and maintaining the core data models that power our most critical analytics and reporting initiatives.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop & Maintain Foundational Data Models
    • Build, refine, and maintain core dbt models in Google BigQuery, ensuring data is accurate, up-to-date, and well-documented.
    • Collaborate with GTM (go-to-market) and marketing teams to anticipate data needs and design solutions.
  • Partner with Analytics Stakeholders
    • Understand business and analytical requirements from various teams.
    • Streamline complex data queries, reducing overhead for analysts and other data consumers.
  • Optimize Data Workflows
    • Use Apache Airflow (or similar DAG frameworks) to orchestrate and schedule data transformations.
    • Automate manual reporting tasks, simplifying data pipelines and reducing risk of human error.
    • Support advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI workflows for product and sales initiatives
  • Ensure Data Quality & Reliability
    • Monitor data flows for anomalies and reconcile inconsistencies across different systems.
    • Innovate and implement improvements that bolster system reliability and data integrity.
  • Collaborate & Communicate
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (e.g., product, revenue operations, marketing) to share insights and drive data-informed decisions.
    • Provide clear, concise technical explanations to a wide variety of stakeholders.

What You Should Have

  • Technical Expertise
    • 5+ years of professional experience as a Data Engineer (or similar role) in building scalable, high-quality data pipelines.
    • Advanced SQL skills with a penchant for well-architected data models and optimized query performance.
    • Familiarity with the modern data stack—dbt and Google BigQuery are big pluses.
    • Exposure to Apache Airflow or similar DAG frameworks.
    • Some familiarity with Python or Ruby.
  • Analytical & Business Acumen
    • Comfort collaborating with go-to-market and marketing teams to understand their data needs.
    • Strong judgment in differentiating essential vs. nice-to-have features and making trade-offs.
  • Communication & Collaboration
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to discuss complex data engineering concepts in clear, simple terms.
    • Proven track record of partnering effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Mindset
    • A growth mindset and a drive for continuous improvement.
    • Passion for building robust, scalable systems that drive impactful business decisions.
  • Bonus Skills
    • Experience with BI/visualization platforms like Tableau, Looker, or similar tools.
    • Familiarity with operational systems like Google Analytics, Segment, or Stripe.
    • Sharp product instincts and ability to align data solutions with broader business objectives.
