Location: This position can be filled as Hybrid in Columbus, OH 2 days a week or Remote.

Job Description Summary

Specialty insurance underwriting at Nationwide requires both superior analytic and exceptional communication skills. As a Senior Underwriter, you'll analyze, accept and accurately classify applications and renewals for special risk, accident, health insurance, life, disability and dental. You will be an essential part of our medical stoploss process.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Initiates, resolves, communicates and coordinates renewal action on in-force group policies, within authorization limits, and recommends action to be taken on others.

  • Reviews financial data on traditional and alternate-funded renewals. Determines rate changes, funding arrangement/security required and prepares funding renewals.

  • Reviews proposal requests. Requests information as needed according to established procedures and rejects ineligible risks.

  • Reviews requests for traditional and alternate-funded proposals and relevant financial reports. Determines the appropriate funding alternatives and prepares and communicates quotes.

  • Reviews and processes submissions on sold accounts. Recommends approval, declination and any necessary rate adjustment within authorized limits.

  • Processes the issue of benefit revisions on in-force policies within authorization limits.

  • Corresponds with the appropriate internal/external source to acquire additional information as necessary in the underwriting process.

  • Assists with audits of program partners and internal underwriting staff.

  • Acquires in-depth knowledge of all assigned product line contracts and associated forms.

  • Monitors performance of assigned product lines and communicates results to supervisor.

  • Reviews and analyzes underwriting referrals for new business and renewals from account executives and program partners and refers to manager if over authorization limit.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Group Underwriting Manager and does not have direct reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in business administration, math or insurance. Participation in, or attainment of, technical insurance designations such as HIAA or LOMA.

Experience: Four years of underwriting experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proven knowledge of group insurance underwriting principles and procedures. Knowledge of plan design and pricing. Knowledge of various funding mechanisms. Knowledge of group risk selection and methods for modifying risks to make them acceptable. Effective verbal and written communication skills to effectively connect with others. Ability to recognize problem situations, identify underlying issues, devise alternative solutions, select most appropriate solution and follow through to implementation. Ability to prioritize work/time. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Access and Word. Ability to analyze and interpret statistical and logical data. Ability to make basic decisions involving evaluating data and recommend solutions. Ability to conduct mathematics operations, including the evaluation of algebraic statements. Ability to interpret medical information and determine future impact. Ability to make decisions involving analyzing data, finding solutions and recommending solutions.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing Exceptions to the above must be approved by the Vice President and Human Resources.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for Sr Underwriter - Specialty Insurance : $55,500.00-$113,500.00

The expected starting salary range for Sr Underwriter - Specialty Insurance : $61,500.00 - $91,500.00
