Job description

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest.

We are seeking a highly motivated Software Engineering Manager to contribute to Developer Productivity, with a focus on Test Platform Engineering. Our team’s flagship platforms provide lightweight test frameworks for every layer, synthetic identities, test data seeding, endpoint mocking, and overall testing infrastructure. These tools enable Affirm Engineering Teams to perform automated, deterministic testing with consistency across locations. Additionally, we support our partner teams in conducting exploratory testing, allowing us to collaboratively evolve our ways of working.

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a passion for driving impact, and the ability to foster growth in both individuals and teams. As a manager at Affirm, you will balance execution excellence with people-focused leadership, ensuring your team delivers business value while maintaining a supportive and inclusive culture.

Our goal is to create a workplace where teams, composed of partners from engineering, product, and design backgrounds, can focus on creativity and problem-solving, empowered by simplified, repeatable, and automated testing processes.
In this role, you will actively collaborate on the multi-year roadmap, design technical solutions for the hardest problems, and drive cross-team, cross-domain initiatives. You will work closely with the Engineering Director and the team to enhance quality standards and processes, while representing the team in broader organizational efforts.

Affirm is growing fast and we want you to enable us to scale our products to 10x and beyond through building world-class systems which enable Affirm in its mission to provide honest financial products which improve lives.

We are only just getting started! Come join us as we build a beloved, lasting financial services brand predicated on honesty and trust. It’s going to be an amazing ride!

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and Inspire: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, fostering a culture of growth, psychological safety, and high performance.

  • Deliver Results: Drive execution on impactful projects, aligning with Affirm’s goals while ensuring technical excellence and system health.

  • Strategize and Plan: Define team roadmaps, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, stakeholder needs, and customer impact.

  • Enhance Collaboration: Build strong cross-functional relationships, resolving conflicts, and aligning team goals with broader organizational objectives.

  • Operational Excellence: Set and track goals, priorities, and metrics for your team, maintaining efficient processes and ensuring progress.

  • Foster Innovation: Encourage bold and creative problem-solving to achieve meaningful results and optimize for long-term success.

  • Advocate for Diversity and Inclusion: Promote an inclusive environment where team members feel empowered to bring their authentic selves and diverse perspectives are valued.

What We Look For:

  • Strong sense of ownership in everything we do, ensuring accountability and excellence in all aspects of our craft.

  • Proven experience managing software engineering teams, with a track record of delivering high-impact projects.

  • Ability to independently lead teams in solving open-ended, ambiguous problems with significant business or customer impact.

  • Strong decision-making skills, balancing technical depth with strategic vision and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide clarity, alignment, and context across all levels of the organization.

  • A focus on team development and health, with the ability to identify and create growth opportunities for team members.

  • Experience with defining and executing technical strategies, aligning with long-term organizational goals.

  • A commitment to operational excellence and system health, ensuring high-quality engineering practices and system reliability.

  • Previous Hands-On Experience in Key Technologies: Python, Kotlin, or React, with a focus on testing best practices. Familiarity with Test-Driven Development (TDD) is a plus.
