What’s the role?
Etsy is looking for a Strategy & Operations Director to lead our Company Operating Rhythm. This role owns, refreshes, and catalyzes our companywide operating rhythms to drive focus, alignment, accountability, and creativity across our organization. This role is expected to design and run our ongoing company performance review forums so that our employees maintain clarity of priorities and are motivated to achieve our collective goals. This person will define compelling ways to align and review our progress across various teams, initiatives, and time spans.

This high-visibility individual contributor role requires strong executive presence, judgment, and writing skills. This person is defined by their curiosity, stamina, maturity, discretion and leadership. They cultivate a broad range of interests: historical and emergent trends in business strategy, macro trends in economics, politics and society, and management philosophy, organizational psychology and design.

They practice the belief that they can get from good to great by including others in their problem-solving. This enables them to be effective and valued in a range of contexts, and ultimately help advance Etsy to a new level of business performance, organizational brilliance, and marketplace creativity.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Sr Director of Strategy & Operations - Corporate. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our
competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn Office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Candidates living within commutable distance of our hub may be the first to be considered. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.

What’s this team like at Etsy?
We provide S&O services to our CHRO, CLO and CFO, long-term corporate strategy for the enterprise, stewardship of Etsy’s Senior Leadership Team and ET Directs, and operating rhythm design and focus for the organization.

What does the day-to-day look like?
  • Regularly review, refresh, and stress test our operating rhythms – collecting feedback across the organization, from our peers in market, and from management psychology and organizational research to enable Etsy’s highest culture and performance.

  • Design operating rhythms and meeting formats to support companywide focus and alignment on our highest impact priorities, as well as crossfunctional coordination, issue spotting, and problem solving.

  • Partner with Strategic Finance & Analytics (SFA) and other company. leaders to define and produce our metrics reports and meeting content, including but not limited to: Quarterly Business Reviews, Monthly Metrics, and board scorecards.

  • Chair the meeting(s) that complements metrics review, facilitating content development, executive team feedback, and discussions to drive reflection and iteration across the company.

  • Prioritize the cadence and content of initiatives and working group reviews by our full Executive Team or CEO to ensure timely, relevant, and impactful feedback and progress towards our goals.

  • Build and lead portfolio views for our Executive Team to understand and adapt level of investment across priorities, metrics, and types of work.

  • Work with SFA and your S&O peers to lead a global Objectives and Key Results process to cascade Key Performance Indicators within teams. This role drives the connection and validation of how organizational and team goals ladder up to the highest priority companywide metrics.

  • In partnership with SFA, you will support the company-wide approach for strategic and financial planning to be nimble and efficient, helping the company make wise investment decisions.

  • You will own our operating calendar planning process, working with our Communications team, SFA team, People and Workplace, Executive Team, and S&O team.

  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
  • Over 10 years of proven experience in strategy consulting, a corporate strategy role, or a strategic finance role in a fast-paced public company, with experience working with the C-Suite and VP level.

  • Previously worked in Strategy & Operations or a related function in more than one tech company, in order to bring your operating rhythm expertise to Etsy.

  • You have set and driven Objectives and Key Result definitions cross-functionally, and you are passionate about how clear metrics can orient a company’s direction and focus. You frequently research and learn about how other companies set priorities, measure progress against their goals, and communicate cross functionally on their progress and roadblocks.

  • You enjoy designing meeting structures, content, and meeting norms for business performance review and communicating high level or ambiguous concepts in a palatable way to broad audiences.

  • Possess a strong belief in how ways of working can drive organizational and financial performance.

  • Adept at zooming in and out from specific tracks of work and projects to higher level, overarching goals and their connection to the company strategy. You understand short term vs. long term strategy and related performance management.

  • You cultivate a deep interest in tech, eCommerce, marketplaces, and other relevant business topics that permeate your day to day work.

  • Creative and rigorous problem solver, skilled at information analysis, synthesis and distillation .

  • Ability to influence outcomes and people without reporting lines and a track record of methodically inspiring change that resulted in increased value for your partners.

  • You ‘work out loud’ to arrive at solutions iteratively and collaboratively.

  • Agile mentality and understand the importance of continuous reflection, adjusting course based on new inputs, and how to minimize waste of resources when delivering.

  • You are very organized in terms of time and knowledge management, highly adept at prioritizing across a number of active work streams. You maintain focus and calm as priorities shift.

  • A plus: Experience with a dual-sided marketplace.
