ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Financial Counseling Specialist works closely with IVX Health administrative staff, patients, and payor representatives to ensure patients have access to financial assistance, co-pay programs, and insurance plan resources. This role focuses on identifying and resolving patient financial barriers by leveraging grants, co-payment assistance, and other financial aid options. Unlike traditional Revenue Cycle Specialist roles, this position places less emphasis on billing processes, appeals, or denial trends and instead centers on financial counseling and patient advocacy. Exceptional communication and organizational skills, along with a service-oriented mindset, are the foundations of this role.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Act as the primary resource for patients needing financial counseling, including assistance with co-pay programs, insurance plans, and grant applications.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to ensure patients are aware of and enrolled in applicable financial assistance programs.
- Provide support for co-payment appeals related to medical necessity, coordinating with internal teams as needed.
- Maintain a working knowledge of payor policies, financial assistance programs, and co-pay regulations.
- Educate patients on their financial responsibilities and available resources to help mitigate financial barriers to care.
- Work closely with payor representatives to resolve patient financial issues without focusing on claim denials or broader appeal processes.
- Support efforts to improve financial counseling processes and recommend strategies to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Ensure complete and accurate documentation of patient financial counseling efforts and outcomes.
- Assist with any cross-departmental initiatives that impact patient access to financial resources, including liaising with Prior Authorization or Billing teams when necessary.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills in all patient and stakeholder communications.
- Participate in department meetings to discuss trends, share updates on financial assistance programs, and provide insights to improve patients' financial experiences.
- Take ownership of special projects related to financial assistance or grants, as assigned by the manager.

Qualifications
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Proficiency with standard office software applications (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
- Excellent organizational, consultative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to multitask and adapt to fast-paced work environment
- Strong knowledge of insurance plans, payor processes, co-pay programs, and financial assistance grants
- Takes initiative and capitalizes on all opportunities to improve department efficiency and effectiveness
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with patients and internal stakeholders
- Empathy and the ability to provide patient-centered financial support
- Ability to collaborate and communicate at all levels of an organization
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 2 Year / Associates Degree in Medical Office Managing, Medical Insurance, or Medical Coding strongly preferred
- 5-7 years’ experience working in full revenue cycle in a facility or physician office setting or similar role
WAGE RANGE
Pay is based on a number of factors including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, and is benchmarked against similar organizations to our size and industry. For our Senior Financial Counseling Specialist role, we generally pay new hires between $23.50 and $28.00 per hour. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for roles and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each situation. In addition to cash pay, full-time regular employees are eligible for 401(k), health benefits, and other company benefits; some of these benefits may also be available for part-time positions.
